Who makes the Starfinder mirrors?

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

Posted in Equipment Talk, but did not get any hits. Let me try it here.

Does anyone know who makes the mirrors for the Meade Starfinder line? Are they ground in-house or made by another company? I have a 12.5 f/4.8 that was made 3/11/99. It looks like there are initials "J.L." and "G.P." in marker on the bottom.

Thanks,

Tim H.

Mars by Ben Bova

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

Just happen to come across a copy of the book "Mars" by Ben Bova. With all of the hype surrounding Mars, it was a very good book and easy read. Bova is considered a Science Fiction writter, not a Science Fantasy writter. He really does his research.

The book is about the first humans to land on Mars and the things they encounter. Everything that happens in the book, could really happen. The book was written in 1992 and contains subject matter that is being discussed today. I would recommend this book to any one interested in Mars.

Ground board. Ebony Star or Teflon?

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

Just wondering if it makes a difference on which surface the Ebony Star or Teflon is applied? I found a nice 16" x 19" piece of laminated counter material (not press board either) that I would like to use as my ground board. I would then attach the Magic Sliders or Teflon to the bottom of the rocker box. Would this be a problem?

Focuser Travel

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

What are some of the factors in choosing a focuser travel length (1.5", 2", 2.75")? I would think choosing the most travel would help eliminate the possibility of an eyepiece not achieving focus. I am building a truss scope and need to decide on a focuser.

Focuser orientation...Which way?

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

Getting ready to put my focuser on the upper cage and wondered which way the orientation should be. What are some of the Pros and Cons for the focuser to be installed either the knob ends running the length of the scope or knob ends running the width of the scope? I have only used the first method mentioned.

Thanks,

Tim Hornbeck

Help me ... I am obsessed

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

While I was making coffee this morning, a thought came to mind that you could use large coffee cans connected together to make a tube. I actually went as far as measuring the diameter of the coffee can. It's ~6". Then I actually took our Pampered Chef can opener (the one that makes a very smooth cut) and opened up the bottom. The can has numerous ribs along the edges that make the can very rigid. You could actually use one of those Meade 4.5" mirrors and have a very unique scope. Very neat conversation piece at viewing sessions.

Anyone every do something like this?

Focuser Board

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

I am ready to work on my focuser board and was wondering what some people have used. Both the material and thickness.

I have some 3/16" - 1/4" subflooring (nice outside finish, nice grain patterns), but was thinking it might be too flimsy for the focuser (Moonlite CR1). I also have 1/2" Baltic Birch. I want to keep the cage weight down, if possible.

Thanks,

Tim H.
