Microcosm

Posted By James Adams

What we've got here...is a failure, to communicate! [For extra credit, what's the movie?]

Nearly every thread on this forum has some incindiary theme which moves us to anger; righteous if it's with our inclinations or offended, if it's not.

This is a microcosm of our country today, unfortunately. We haven't been this polarized since Viet Nam [notice how that subject keeps coming into the conversation.]

I like to think the folks who share our hobby represent the most intelligent and inquiring part of society; but the ferocity and vitriol expressed here can be appalling.

I don't take anything from the media very seriously, as it has been spun, warped, or fabricated, and edited into meaninglessness, mostly.

John Kerry was either a paid assassin in a greedy war or an American hero; George Bush is either a strong leader in times of adversity or a service-evading tool of the rich. You probably have decided both men are one, or t'other.

Meanwhile, the real domestic problems we face are going mostly unaddressed. It is the triumph of appearance over substance, and heat over light.

The Shins

Evocative of the Beatles, Beach Boys, the Beau Brummels, but very modern. See: Garden State [the movie, featuring cuts from *Chutes Too Narrow* and *New Slang*]. Delicious!

Baader Orthos?

Posted By James Adams

Does anyone have experience with the Baader Planetarium ortoscopics? At $120 they're pricey next to some, but I'd expect a good product from them.

Thanks

Liquid Lenses

Posted By James Adams

I remember that a few years ago a fellow from the optics lab at Lockheed had developed a liquid which, when sandwiched between two glass elements, provided an abnoral level of dispersion. As I remember, it created an apochromatic lens. I don't remember what the glass elements were.

I was told that with the "inexpensive" apos coming from Russia there was no market for these, and that's the last I heard.

Does anyone know why this technology [seemingly] didn't pan out?

Dispute With Coronado

Posted By James Adams

I purchased a 60 mm. solar filter and BF 15 from Coronado Instruments and I've been very happy with it.

I put a down payment for it at RTMC in 2002 [IIRC]. It was to have been delivered in August. It didn't come, and a payment I was counting on didn't happen, either.

I contacted Coronado and told them not to send the filter, since I would be unable to pay for it at the time, but a few weeks later, it showed up. I phoned to tell them the situation, but didn't hear anything back.

Coronado finally phoned to ask for payment and we agreed I would pay monthly until it was paid off. Twice I couldn't make the payment, and I phoned to let them know. I talked to several different people, including Gerry, who was unsympathetic and arrogant, completely different from how she was when she took my downpayment.

I paid it off completely, but Coronado sent the matter to collection anyway. The credit reporting company placed a ding on my credit. Coronado refuses to get it erased, and now are telling a different story about what happened.

If there is no advantage to paying for merchandise, if one's credit is to be hurt anyway, why pay it off? Why not take the hit you're going to take anyway, and keep the merchandise? I wouldn't, and didn't, do that.

Check my AM ratings to see if you think I'm a flake.

C-8 Tripod For Outdoor Education

Posted By James Adams

San Mateo County Outdoor Education brings kids from fifth to eighth grades to camp for a week in the redwoods. Their C-8 suffered from misuse by inexperienced counselors, but they now have an experienced amateur to run the astronomy program.

However, the tripod was allowed the full coastal California experience and is no longer usable.

If anyone can donate or sell for a reasonable price a replacement tripod, they're back in business!

Thanks in advance,

News On Sky Scout?

Posted By James Adams

I can't find anything like a review, or anything about availability of the Sky Scout by Celestron. Are bugs being worked out, or is it just going to fade away into the Cosmic Background?

Thanks,

Ortho Question

Posted By James Adams

I've seen various orthoscopic eyepieces described as "Abbe Orthoscopic"; for instance, UO ortho's, in ads on AM and elsewhere.

Has the apellation "orthoscopic" come to mean "Abbe orthoscopic"? Isn't the "Abbe" ortho a very specific design, by Zeiss, and different from most others?

Just asking...
