There is a lot more detail in your image than you might expect. Here is your image processed with ImagesPlus digital development. Try stacking multiple 30 second images. You will be amazed at the results.

Great first image. I did a little processing (color adjustment, unsharp mask and crop). Here is the result.

Also, try a few more (about 20 or so) shorter exposures and use translate and rotate function in ImagesPlus to stack your images. Also try background adjustment after digital development with unsharpmasking (medium).

Keep trying. You will be amazed at how quickly your images will improve.

They both have filter threads for 1.25" or 2" filters.

I use a Canon 300D with my PST and it works very well. The image as seen in the Ha scope is what is captured. Here is a sample, with the color adjusted to show some surface detail.

Stiletto focuser experience

I have been using the Stiletto for a couple of years. Here is a comparison of M13 taken using the best focus I could get using the viewfinder of my Canon 300D (left) and with the Stiletto (right). As you can see the focus with the viewfinder is not bad, but the focus with the Stiletto is right on.

I generally just use one 60 second AVI (about 1800 frames at 30 frames/second); however. if you are concerned about planet rotation or too much image movement, you can process the 20 second AVIs individually and then combine the four or five resulting images.

Here is an image of Jupiter using a single 60 second or so AVI.

What about one of the 66mm scopes from William Optics, Stellarvue, etc.? They have a focl length of 400mm, whic would result in F10 with your SM40, whic is the focal ratio Coronado recommends with their SolarMax filters.

Manual or Motorized Focuser for Astrophotography

I would definitely recommend a motorized focuser. I use a JMI NGF-CM focuser with their latest motor control hand unit, which provides three focusing speeds that allows very fine focus control.

I also use, and highly recommend, the STI Stiletto focuser with my Canan DSLR camera.

Here is a sample of the excellent focus control provided by the JMI focuser and STI Stiletto.

Have you tried ImagesPlus (www.mlunsold.com)? It is specifically designed for processing astro images. It also has the added benefit of being able to control Canon and Nikon DSLRs. It also comes with a tutorial CD which provides step-by-step instructions on how to use all of the processing functions.
