Last image from today; I caught this hawk as it soared directly overhead. Luckily I got the exposure right, although the focus is a tiny bit off--it was moving really fast. Nikon D100, 400mm f/8, 1/1500s.

Not to be a stick in the mud, but it's not considered good etiquette to use other people's images without their permission, even when having fun. This is Ron Wodaski's image, posted to this forum here:

This was an experiment with a new adapter I had made so that I could use my Takahashi FS-60C with my ST-10 for wide-field imaging. The adapter is not quite perfect, or I had some issues getting everything attached perfectly, as there is some noticable coma in the corners that is more pronounced on the right edge of the image. Part of this is focal point; images through the clear filter did not show this effect. This combination is very sensitive to having the correct metalback distance between the reducer and the chip. I think I can work on it a little more, but I will wait until it's not so cold outside.

Anyway, this is a 180-minute image (9x20m) with an SBIG ST-10XE using a Custom Scientific 3nm Hydrogen-alpha filter. Minimal processing and reduced 50% for this forum. This camera/scope combo should be fun this summer.

Fox Sparrow

Spring in WI means migrating Fox Sparrows. In my opinion, they are the most handsome of the sparrows found in the eastern US, and their song is lovely. This one came up to the feeder near the house and even though the lighting was not optimal and I had to shoot through a window, I think the picture came out OK.

Nikon D100 with 80-400mm VR lens, f/5.6.

The Bird's Foot Violets are blooming on the hill prairie behind my house. Really a wonderful site, but the hill is hard on the knees. It's so steep it borders on the vertical.

Indigo Buntings have arrived

These are very tough to photograph as the color is refractive, so the angle of lighting is critical--if it's not just right, the bird looks brown. This shot is not perfect--I shot it at 400mm (600mm equivalent), through a window on a rainy dawn, so I had to shoot it at 1/30th of a second, hand-held! That tells you a little someothing of how good the VR technology is. This guy is the first I have seen this year, and was only about 6 feet away out the bedroom window. The orioles are here and so are the rose-breasted grosbeaks and ruby-throated hummingbirds, so I hope to get some other shots up soon. Nikon D-100, BTW.

Have arrived. Busy week here in southern Wisconsin. This is also through a window. This guy alighted on the porch rail in a drizzle and looked miserable. The dim conditions forced me to use ISO 400 on the camera (Nikon D100), and the best I could to was 1/180s at f/5.6 with the 80-400mm VR lens at 400mm.

The picture came out fairly well, though, or at least I think so.

Ruby-throated hummingbird

This is one of two males fighting over our feeder. He is perched on a mandevilla we just put out. Spring appears to be here to stay.
