Rosette Nebula

Posted By Jason Lane

Nice shot. I've gotten my hands on some old Supra 400 and I like the fact that it can be developed at the one-hour photo shop. It doesn't seem to saturate colors as much as the Provia 400F (and E200) that I normally used, which takes some getting used to.
On your Rosette, the background looks a little unbalanced to me, like it might have some extra red in it.

Cheers,
Jason

You could ask her not to because it would destroy your viewing. Give her a view through the scope or two.

Why No BVC??

Posted By Jason Lane

I asked the local optician about BVC a while ago. If I remember correctly, there are issues that arise due to the way the material is composed layered sheets of plate glass (vs. a polycrystalline structure in most other substrates) that makes it difficult to work with. I don't remember the precise details of the conversation, but I would guess that it has to do with grinding/polishing through one layer to the next. In addition to it being soft, this makes for difficulty in finishing out a good surface. You can work with it, and it has great thermal and mechanical properties when it's done, but it takes very careful effort (read: lots more time) to do so.

Cheers,
Jason

Hi Eric,

Looks pretty good, though I can see a little bit of elongation of stars in the direction of upper-left to bottom-right. Maybe a little bit of polar misalignment? You caught a galaxy in the upper-right-hand corner also..very nice. Do you know which one that is?

Processing looks fine...little bit of graininess but that looks fine. What film did you use? What's the exposure time? Do you have a coma-corrector on your newt?

Thanks for sharing,
Jason

Rho Ophiuchus

Nice shot, Dwight. I like Rho Oph as well. It's also a very difficult target, which adds to the fun.

Stripped threads! Desperate rookie seeks help!

I'd tap them to the next biggest size, if you have enough room. Clean out the hole before you start tapping, and keep some oil on the tap threads. Go slow and back out the tap when it binds up too much.
