Comet 17P Holmes (LRGB) 30/10

Posted By Stefan Lammel

Hi all,

Heres my first ever attempt at an LRGB image...

http://www.pbase.com/slammel/image/88159493/original

Probably not the ideal subject for this treatment due to the relative movement so don't look too closely ;o)

I tried to get the colour to look as close as I could get it to the view with binoculars and I am quite happy with that aspect, perhaps it may be slightly different to what others see thanks to a healthy dose of orange sky glow?

For some reason there is an apparent ring structure but I'm fairly sure this is a processing artefact. Processing in 8 bits and a little stretching seems to have brough this out and after trying a few things I cant remove it. I tried to brighten it up a bit as its a bit dark but that brought out the ring structure artefact more. Any comments welcome...

Regards,
Stefan

Holmes 7/11

Hi all,

Just about managed one thin capture last night before the clouds arrived so no LRGB... it certainly is getting more diffuse now. Its going to be challenging to image when it grows to its full extent...

South West Limb, Sinus Medii & unrolled Crescent

Posted By Stefan Lammel

Hi all,

After a loooong dry spell here is an image from 24th November, my first new image for
7 months. The seeing was unremittingly poor so no fine detail but as the libration
was reasonable for the south west and the area is relatively unknown to me I gave it
a go. The area spans Pingre to Cruger, covering some perhaps less imaged features
along the way such as the Inghirami, Baade and Bouvard valleys, the craters Lagrange
and Piazzi (hard to detect here as they are aged and shallow), Cordillera Mountains,
the bright ray crater Byrgius A and Rimae Darwin and Sirsalis. Its certainly an interesting
area worth returning to when the seeing is more co-operative.

Having looked again at some avis from March 26th I found a few that are better
than I thought and conveniently make a nice widefield mosaic when combined with my
previous image of the Hyginus and Triesnecker Rilles.

And lastly an unrolled version of a previous image from 19th April taken with my 7" Newt

The Sharp Rille

Posted By Stefan Lammel

Hi all,

Here's another one that nearly got away... from 2nd November 06 an image of the Sharp Rille, with the Mairan Rille and Gruituisen domes. I was really pleased when I found the rille appeared in the processed image, I couldn't see it at all in the avi! smile

Sharp & Mairan Rilles & Gruithuisen domes :

2 image mosaic (enlarged 127.5%)

Sharp Rille :
http://www.pbase.com/slammel/image/89908312/original
single image (enlarged 200%)

In a previous LPOD http://www.lpod.org/?m=20060526 Chuck Wood wonders if the Sharp Rille might have once been continuous with the Mairan Rille. From the LOIV image 4158_h2 http://www.lpi.usra.edu/resources/lunarorbiter/images/print/4158_h2.jpg it seems there is only about 25 km separating the ends of the Sharp and Mairan Rilles. The ragged ends of two rilles do look very different here at their extremes, Sharp is much broader. There appears to be what looks like 3 or 4 very faint short linear rilles in between which resemble the Mairan Rille more than the Sharp Rille in appearance. To my eye there is just a suggestion in this image that these very faint linear rilles might overlap and continue to the west of Sharp. This enhanced crop shows this area just a little more clearly http://www.pbase.com/slammel/image/89942659/original

Aristarchus & Prinz Rilles

Posted By Stefan Lammel

Hi all,

Here is the latest result from my barrel scraping...

First of all, apologies for the horribly blown highlights!
Once your retinas adjust there are some interesting things to see here
that intrigue me. Like the strangely elongated dome(?) at bottom left
with a similarly elongated pit. (the GLR Dome map shows a dome
identified on the side of this feature but to me it looks like its the
whole thing, or maybe I am misreading the indication on the dome map).
The lower two of the Aristarchus Rilles seemed to look a bit ragged in
the west compared to other images and at first I thought the
processing had messed up, but checking with the LOIV image
http://www.lpi.usra.edu/resources/lunarorbiter/images/print/4150_h3.jpg
I could see they meander and broaden out quite a bit here. Another
oddity is the distictive wide valley to the east of Montes Agricolla.
It looks completely out of place somehow, I wonder how it got there?

LPOD sick

Posted By Stefan Lammel

Passing on this message from Chuck Wood, if anyone has any suggestions I'm sure Chuck would appreciate it...

I can not get the WordPress software that LPOD uses to save files. It has
been getting progressively slower over the last months and now it
effectively does not work. I have no idea why. Perhaps the number of files
is larger than WordPress can handle.
Saturday's LPOD is at http://the-moon.wikispaces.com/LPOD+Jan+12%2C+2008 and
I will post others there until I can return to the normal site.

Please pass on this information to as many lists and places where folks who
normally visit LPOD might stumble upon it.

Thanks,
Chuck

Deslandres, Petavius & Ariadaeus Rille

Posted By Stefan Lammel

Hi all,

Its been ages since I had any new material to work with but at last I
had several days of fairly good seeing in February. Still getting to
grips with the Infinity 2-1M and I hope I'll be able to improve the
processing of these shorter AVIs eventually. Some of the seeing has
really surprised me, on Ariadaeus the reference frame was so well
aligned with just a single point it hardly looked like it would need
MAP, I've only seen that once before and that was with the smaller DMK-21.

In the linked image (south up) you might see the so called 'Moon Maiden' http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap030619.html , or alternatively perhaps a sphinx munching on a bunch of grapes!
