My mirror - back with numbers

Posted By Marcin Klapczynski

Ok I used localized pressure with one hand on 2 & 3 zones with tool on top and 1/4 D \/\/\ stroke for around 20 minutes. It seems to work smile - surface error decreased to 2 lambda (from 2.64) Here are the numbers (3 reedings):
Z1: 0.37 0.39 0.24
Z2: 1.99 2.10 2.16
Z3: 4.18 4.30 4.10
Z4: 6.15 6.22 6.11

My only conern is whether focusing on particular zones will affect general shape of the mirror. What do you think? Hello? Anybody there? grin

First light thru my new baby

So here it is - it's solid, functional and beautiful. I am very proud of it and enjoying using it.

I would like to name it LEM, in memoriam Stanislaw Lem, Polish science fiction and philosophy writer (author of Solaris, Ciberiada, Tales of Pirx the Pilot, Return from the Stars and many more), who has died recently.

How old are you???

Posted By Marcin Klapczynski

I am 27 years old and I am a beginner. Some of you may already know me from the 'Telescope Making' forum - I made a mirror and a telescope by myself, which is the proof of my patience grin
I really enjoy starring at the sky wonders, (although Chicago's sky doesn't have too much to offer smile ) and I know that this will be one of my passions for the rest of my life. I know some other guys around 30 who are as enthusiastic as I am about stargazing, so it isn't about the age.

Transit of Mercury - NOV 08

Thanks for posting that! If weather permits, I will take a day off to enjoy the show on my backyard. smile

One question - will a cheap Baader solar filter suffice for this purpose?

Table on rear of dob

Posted By Marcin Klapczynski

That's neat. Good idea. smile

I have another question though, sorry for the off topic. I noticed that the tube splits in two, is that right? If yes, does it work out well in terms of stability? If the upper part shifts slightly, it'll put the telescope out of collimation... I'd appreciate if you could disassemble it and take a picture? Maybe some close ups on those joints? I was thinking about splitting the tube in half to make my telescope more portable but I was afraid about unwanted results.
regards

What Do Amateurs Do For a Living?

Posted By Marcin Klapczynski

I am a scientist - a molecular biologist. I just like to push the limits and see beyond most people usually do - literally - I use optical technology to see extremes: super tiny molecules using confocal microscope and monstrous galaxies using my telescope 8) Both unexplored - complex living cells and vast universe give me same goosebumps and hours of excitement.

I am taking the hard line on this, sorry.

Sorry to bump in, but I have been on this forum for over a year now and I didn't know that there was a list of "forbidden" terms (manufacturers? sellers? websites? curses?). :S
Why don't you send priv or e-mail mass-message to all users to list whatever is forbidden?
Thanks
