Guns in Church?

Posted By Russell Cole

We have at least one gun in our church. It is the pistol on the armed police officer acting as a security guard. We had a couple of instances where the people, who we were trying to reach, were trying to reach things they should not and being confrontational about it. That put some folks on edge, so we got a security guard. Having a security guard in church seems kinda odd to me, but the times they are a changin'. ... or maybe they ain't ...

Why people believe

Posted By Russell Cole

I agree that people are easily duped. We are also very stubborn when it comes to changing years of long held beliefs. That is why careful study and fellowship are required to reach any meaningful understanding.

Bible-Based Geocentricity

Posted By Russell Cole

Yup, just plain embarrassing.

I'm sure that there are folks, like me, who can see that science and religion do not have to be at complete odds with each other. Religion has faith only aspects and science has no room for faith, so they will always have a separation. But to have crazy ideas like that web site is like going back to saying the Earth is flat and/or the center of, well, all things.

My view of God, is that He is "large" enough to encompass all things we have and will find through science.

Re: autoguiding with the LXD75

Posted By Russell Cole

I think you can get an APM #909 module to add guiding capabilities to the LXD75. You have to hunt for these as they are discontinued (I saw one on astromart recently). I have recently added one to my LXD75. It does allow me to use the 1209 microfocuser from the 497 controller and software. My plan is to look into using it for guiding as well, but I have not got that far.

Edit: I plan on using the GPUSB and PHD for guiding the LXD75 with the 909 port. I have a GPUSB on my LX200, that I will use to experiment.

Haiti's Pact with Satan

NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report) - In the wake of his comments about the earthquake in Haiti, televangelist Pat Robertson has become a "public relations nightmare" and a "gynormous embarrassment to me, personally," God said today.

Genesis and science

Posted By Russell Cole

I agree 100% with his intro for Genesis, but I would obviously have to hear the whole thing to know if I agree with specific points. Nonetheless, I agree that, if science says it is (I realize science does course corrections, and that IMO should be expected), then for religion to deny such a thing in the face of overwhelming evidence (for example, I consider evidence for evolution overwhelming), would make such a religion very "weak".

Spirituality due to brain damage?

Posted By Russell Cole

... Hmmmm ...

If brain damage leads to religion, and drinking alcohol kills brain cells, can I find God by drinking beer?

I knew all those kegers back in high school were for some reason.

Theological Definitions

Posted By Russell Cole

I can work with those definitions. I'm still mulling over the soul definition. I always thought of the soul and spirit as equal, but after some reading, I see many use the terms body, soul, and spirit, as three separate things.

Disasters in the news

Posted By Russell Cole

I think Christ "coming on a cloud" would be a pretty good sign. The rest is just business as usual.

Jesus said that knowing the signs is a easy as watching trees bud to know that summer is near. That gives me the impression that it is going to be rather unmistakable.
