Life of a Telrad

Posted By Paul Shin

I have a 2 year old Telrad that suddenly died. Its been lightly used and never been dropped or bumped. Is this normal and are there any fixes? Any comment and / or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Paul smile

Looking for a New Mount

Posted By Paul Shin

I’m recently purchased a used C9.25 mounted on a CG5 ASGT. I knew the mount had issues, but was hoping to get it to work. Nonetheless, I tried everything and I’m now looking for a replacement. I was hoping to find a more robust mount (I’m planning to piggyback a small refractor) that I could use with my existing CG5 tripod and counter weights. Reason being, I live in Hawaii and shipping from the mainland to Hawaii can be rather expensive, especially heavy items. Any comments and / or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Paul smile

HELP!!!! Mold on Corrector Plate

Posted By Paul Shin

After about three month of sitting in storage (in my bedroom), I decided to mount my C9.25 and to my surprise, I found several spots on the inside of the corrector plate. After doing a search on AM, it appears to be mold buildup. I read a post about cleaning mold on the corrector with a solution of 50% regular ammonia and 50% hydrogen peroxide. However, it wasn’t clear if this was meant for the outside or the inside of the corrector. I also read that the mold could have already damaged the coating and that cleaning will not help. The views of the C9.25 appear unaffected, but am concerned that the mold will continue to grow. Also, I’m planning to remove the rubber plug at the end of the visual back and cover it with something breathable like cheese cloth. What’s also strange is I have a 10” LX200 sitting next to the C9.25 and have not seen mold on that scope’s corrector. The LX200 was also not used for about three months. The only difference is that the OTA on the LX200 is off the ground (held in the fork mount), while the C9.25 is sitting on the carpet (corrector side down w/ cover covering the corrector plate). I’m considering taking off the corrector and cleaning it from the inside. Am I asking for more problems? Any comments and / or suggestions will be greatly appreciated smile

LX200 Classic Doesn't Power-Up

Posted By Paul Shin

After about six months of not being used, last night I setup my 10” LX200 Classic and it didn’t power-up. I used both the A/C & D/C adapters. I also checked the fuse behind the face plate and it was okay. I also replaced it with a new fuse with no luck. I went online and read that this seems to be somewhat common on the LX200 Classics after not being used for some time. However, it appears that most experienced blown fuses, which mine does not do. My question is, could it be a faulty power switch? Previously, I had an issue with the power switch on my CG5. Any comments and / or suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance smile

Help Needed, I Can't See Polaris!

Posted By Paul Shin

Since my 10” LX200 is temporary out of service, I’m going to have to use my C9.25 CG5 ASGT as my home setup. However, I live in a valley and can’t see Polaris. Also, my CG5 ASGT mount is not fireware upgradeable, so don’t have access to the All Star alignment. I can get the goto to work okay after a rough initial alignment, but the mount doesn’t track well. I also tried adjusting the altitude and azimuth while the mount was tracking, but it didn’t help. Any comments and / or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Paul smile

Shipping Question

Posted By Paul Shin

Hi Greg,

Thanks for all the great advise smile Sounds like you’ve had some experience with this. Anyhow, I was just wondering how difficult it is to remove the corrector plate? Also, would it be advisable to bring it back with me on the airplane? I was thinking that maybe a well-padded 8” SCT might fit in the overhead compartment with the mount & tripod going through the regular baggage. Or would it be better to place the OTA in a hard case and send it through the regular baggage? I know that you can request special handling and storage for fragile item in the airplane’s baggage compartment, but not sure how well an SCT will do. Again, all comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated smile

Thanks,
Paul

Thanks for all the great responses. Just out of curiosity, what is the optimal viewing distance between your eye and the Telrad window? Thanks again, Paul smile

12v or 18v DC Power Source for LX200 Classic

Posted By Paul Shin

Thanks for all the great responses. I’m thinking about purchasing a “second-hand” new Celestron Power Tank (#18774) and was wondering if it would work with my LX200. Again, any comments and / or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Paul smile

12v or 18v DC Power Source for LX200 Classic

Posted By Paul Shin

When I purchased my used Classic, it came with a 12v DC to 18v DC converter and a 110v AC to 18v DC converter. The question I have is why does it say 12v DC motor in the manual and 12v DC next to the power supply input on the control panel. Again, any comments and / or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Paul smile
