The Sky is Falling!

Posted By Michael Sandy

So I received a couple of nice examples of falls that I really enjoy. Let me introduce the Chergach Family.

Fell in July 2007 in the Republic of Mali

Papa is 89.6 grams
The two smaller whole individuals are 8.3 and 4.1 grams
The largest slice is 18.3 grams
The medimum slice is 9.0 grams and the end cut impact melt is 6.8 grams. The impact melt is by far the most interesting of the pieces - it is very cool!!

There is a Mama piece on the way at 31 grams.......due next week

Too quiet around here.........

Posted By Michael Sandy

......isn't there anyone else out there buying new stones? I haven't seen a new post in way too long. I've got a few things coming in, and I've received a few things since my last post. I'll post some new pictures over the next few days/weeks as they come in (most all were international purchases). I picked up a very nice 25 gr oriented Chergach and another impact melt Chergach.......plus a nice 58 gr Juancheng - maybe a few others as well. To hold thing over, I'll post a shot of my display cabinet.

Another Cocoon

Posted By Michael Sandy

There have been several truely excellent images of this object (one of my favorites) recently - this is not in their class. That being said - this is my most recent attempt at the Cocoon, from the light polluted skies of the SF Bay Area.

This is a straight LRGB using about 10 hours of data - selected from more than 20 hours collected over 5 nights.

How do you deal with this rating issue?

Posted By Michael Sandy

I've had an individual give me a "zero" rating for an ad that never resulted in a transaction, or even a discussion of a transaction (I used the ad to try to get in contact with him, after e-mail and AM messages failed). To be completely clear, we did have a different transaction that went pretty poorly - in fact Herb was nice enough to get involved to help resolve it, and I don't mind that he rated that deal. I just do not like being rated for a transaction that never took place. I sent him a AM Private Message and asked him to remove it......no response so far (which seems to be the normal practice with this guy).

What is the correct way to approach this?

Posts Deleted - Sorry!

Sorry - if you all think that was heavyhanded, I'll take the heat if you do. I'd be willing to turn this forum over to someone else if you'd like. I tried the warning - it didn't work.

If you'd like to discuss Guns and Hunting Optics - this forum is your place. If you want to discuss current events - there are better places.

Thanks in advance for keeping on topic.

It is all about Gun Safety.......

Posted By Michael Sandy

Okay - along the lines of gun safety and training, what are your experiences with teaching young kids to safely handle firearms, how young did you start, what were the results? I started my kids off very young, and I’ll share some of the good things that resulted as they grew up (they are now in their mid twenties) in a separate post.

Do you have any gun safety nightmare stories (I’d call those lessons learned at work) to share from your personal experience that might be helpful for others to learn from?

Did you see the new inventory on Anacortes?

Posted By Michael Sandy

I was just looking at the new additions to the Anacortes website. A very nice selection of Glock and Sig Sauer. I've personally never been very fond of Glocks (but I know many that love them) - I have alway lusted after a Sig P220.......maybe I need to try Tri's plan, I need to learn how to be safe with a Sig you know!

I kind of like the buy on line feature and then they will find a local FFL to ship to.......wonder if there are any issues shipping into California????

Have any of you seen that yet? I can buy a new Ethos and a Sig from one place - what a deal! I wonder if I can use some of my discounts from online ordering - and do I earn more by buying firearms - this is a whole new world!

Home Defense Tactical Shotguns Anyone?

Posted By Michael Sandy

One of the "must have" firearms for any serious shooter is a 12 gage shotgun - and many would say it must be a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500/590 pump (at least that's what I heard 8) ). I had a "Plain Jane" 870 Express Magnum in the locker that I decided to give the full tactical treatment. I'll post a few pictures and a description of the changes I made later on today, but I was wondering how many folks use a 12 gage pump as their home defense weapon of choice, and how are they set-up. Do you think the 12 gage the best choice, and why? What are your thought about Pumps vs Autoladers? What rounds do you load?

Anyone want to play with this topic for a while - there is alot to talk about and many many myths to explore

Handgun Training

Posted By Michael Sandy

Had a chance to take some basic handgun training (about 9 hours of training) this weekend from Louis Awerbuck of Yavapai Firearms Academy. Highly recommended for those without extensive combact experience - or those that do and want to improve their shooting. Very personalized help to address those personal problems with accuracy, and lots of live fire work on the draw and and tactical deployment of a hand gun. It was a lot of fun as well.

Re: New study: FPL-53 is unstable

04/01/2009 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

A long-term study to be published in the SPIE (Society of
Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers) journal Optical
Engineering
has found that the fluoro-crown glass FPL-53,
widely used in telescope lenses, suffers from long-term
degradation. While it is well known that standard crowns
and flints, such as BK-7 and F2, have a stability now
measured in centuries, FPL-53 is a fairly recent glass
formulation and up to now there had been very little
data on its long term stability. The study finds that
the glass begins to devitrify after 20 years, and will
eventually become cloudy and opaque. Numerous microscopic
stress fractures also form in the glass. Full details
can be found in the May issue of Optical Engineering.

This was the first one for 2009 - but it arrived a few hours early on the Left Coast......

I was worried - for a second smile
