Orion Star Shoot Autoguider

Posted By david berman

Just a 'heads up' if you are running Vista 64bit, Orion does not have a driver. They have the driver for the Star Shoot cameras, but it is not compatible with the autoguider. They seem a little vague on the issue, so I would not count on seeing it soon although their web site says mid October. This is really too bad. The autoguider works really well, but almost all new and recent PC's only come with Vista 64 and Window 7 is coming out right behind it. These guys are really behind the curve.

First Shot with FLI8300C/Baby 'Q'

Posted By david berman

This is the first quick test shot with my new FLI8300C and FSQ85. My friend Ashton and I shot this from up in Big Bear last night. This camera shows a lot of potential, thanks to Richard Crisp helping with the processing technique. I really like the Baby 'Q'. It's a fantastic little astrograph. More time on this image would have brought out a lot more detail quite easily.

FLI8300C
10x45 secs.
no darks or flats
unguided on a Mach 1

Under rated Baby 'Q'

Posted By david berman

At 8.5lbs. and 85mm aperature, this little guy is an under rated killer. My buddy and I tried it out for the first time up in Big Bear last Friday night with my new FLI8300C. We were running out of coffee and time so this image was just 10x45 secs. (450secs. total). Can't wait to really go for it with this little deal. It's like a bad habit to shake once you take the first one. We were using a Mach 1 unguided, but an EM-11 or any good quality mount will carry this combo easily. It is truley a portable, research quality scope

I'm close to winding up the restoration of the 5.25" John Byrne scope & mount. Just a few small details and that's about it.

Another Long Focal Length Refrector

Posted By david berman

Just about finished up the restoration process on my Byrne 1887, 5.25" f12 refractor. Planetary and lunar views are spectacular. Can't wait to get it out to dark skies.

Antiques Scopes for sale on Astromart

Posted By david berman

A couple of really nice examples just came up for Auction and for Sale on Astromart that you guys may want to take notice of. We don't see these very often. Anacortes just posted an Auction for a very rare 5" brass tube Unitron, and a 3" Alvan Clark corportation era scope, complete with mount, around mid 1930's to mid 40's vintage is posted for sale. Both are really cool.

Does anyone know if it's possible to delete previous auctions that we have posted? I've looked for a link, but couldn't find one. Thanks

8" f4.5 Cave

Posted By david berman

I just finished restoring this 1975 vintage 8" f4.5 refector on a student mount. It was a bit of a basket case when I acquired it, but after about 50 hours labor it came out pretty nice. Brought back old memories of my first scope which I bought from Tom Cave in 1974. Mostly everything is original, restored almost as new, including focuser, finder, mount and even the clock drive works perfectly. The mirror and diagonal were in excellent condition. We took it out a couple of nights ago as soon as the paint dried. No disappointments at all. Just stunning views even under the light pollution here in Long Beach. Since I have several other scopes, I'll probably play with it for a little while and post it on Astromart for sale.
