Jupiter and the Moon May 18, 2005

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

Seeing was surprisingly decent last night, even despite the rapid cooling after a warm (98 degreeF) day. I managed to get a decent Jupiter and some nice lunar images. I think the Clavius is pretty nice. The first two lunar images were shot at F/33, the last two at F/40 with my Orion ED100. I'll repost later with all details.

BTW, during this weekend (May 20-22) my webpage will likely be down as our Network Admins are upgrading our servers and infrastructure.

I heard from Celestron!!

Posted By Paul Maxson

They sent me an invoice, so I am guessing the C925 is being shipped as I type. They tightened the secondary housing and collimated and cleaned the optics....cost to me... $0.00 including shipping!!

I am anxious to see how the scope performs once I get it back.

Jupiter, Sun and the Moon from May 19, 2005

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

The C925 came back on Friday and needless to say I hustled it out onto the tripod and did imaging that very night. It was not a great night seeing with high clouds and the moon and Jupiter were very close in the sky. Nonetheless, I am not unhappy with the results. We just had a major warmup here in Phoenix with temperatures reaching 109F yesterday and hotter today....maybe 113F!! I'm almost glad there are no major sunspot groups to image!! smile

Jupiter with my C925 on May 20 and 21, 2005

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

Here are more images shot with the C925 since it came back. The first one is pretty nice, the second one was greatly affected by seeing, in particular, record high temperatures during the day. Cool down is very quick after sunset....5-7 degrees in 1/2 hour. I now have an electric focuser and am trying to get used to that too....more images to follow tomorrow.

Jupiter from May 22 and 23, 2005

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

Again I am batting .500. One image turned out nice and the other was affected by seeing. Last night Jupiter put on quite a nice show around 0200UT - 0400UT. I got 6 sets of images and hope to make an animation soon. Meanwhile, here are images from Sunday and Monday evenings.

Re: Martian Prelude

Damian,

Wonderful image!! I am so looking forward to Mars this year to see how much I learned from 2003. I have a feeling we are going to see things on Mars this year we never saw in 2003. I am hoping to start my Mars imaging this weekend.

Clear skies!

Jupiter and animation from May 24, 2005

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

Jupiter put on quite a nice show last night, Ganymede's shadow on the planet, Ganymede just to the left and Europa going behind the planet. I tried to get an animation, which turned out ok. Seeing was about average, but not fabulous.

Jupiter and Mars

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

Managed a decent Jupiter and recognizable Mars despite high heat and only so-so seeing. Hoping Mars will get better as it gets higher in the sky.

Jupiter May 29, 2005

Hi all,

It was a very strange night last night. The wind was blowing 10-20 MPH and gusty, yet Jupiter was very solid. In fact, except for the wind blowing the C925 around, Jupiter was almost stationary. Who woulda guessed??

Hi all,

Here are links to my recent Mars and Jupiter shots. Seeing was average, but the Mars shot is my best so far this year.

The dark spot is the satelite Genymede (not it's shadow, but the actual satelite).
