Maybe the Republican Party needs missionaries to help convert its own drooling masses to true Christianity? Not the ones trying to squeeze you guys out, the ones that want to make Sarah Palin President.

When rescue workers fish out the pulverized masses of flesh from under the rubble, they can sooth the raw nerves (literally) by telling the victims its all in God's Plan.

Ahah! I was right- the rest of the world will boil off, but here in NJ we'll have an ice age. We'll become the environmentally friendly summer vacation Mecca (just keep that whole toxic waste thing under wraps for now, though, huh?).

This might have been good enough when we were living in small groups with primitive technology and Nature was eating us as often as we were eating it, but now we make a BIG dent in the planet's systems. Oh, I forgot, you don't think we are capable of such grandiose effects. Too bad the piece didn't really emphasize the way beliefs tend to hang together into coherent wholes, and not be evenly assorted across populations. Evolution tends to eliminate individuals with faulty cognition, or entire species.

These are signs that people are idiots- they like to live in earthquake-prone areas, reinhabit outskirts of volcanoes, won't evacuate when told, etc.

Maybe this relates to the fact that many believe only God can alter the climate, the weather, or that lightning hits only those that deserve it (as in Europe and the US in the 1700's).

So if you are faithful, nothing will happen to YOU. So if it DOES, it means something more general is coming round the corner, like the End of Days.

Me, I'm sure that giant quakes are from angry giant blocks of compressed hot stone deep in the earth fighting over the girls, but that's just me.

With warming comes scorpions, tarantulas, giant centipedes and lots of mosquitoes, biting flies, etc., tropical diseases, more invasive species. The list goes on.

In the far north the land is subsiding as permafrost melts- this is killing entire forests, and many of the species that depend on them. Sarah Palin may have to move to the lower 48 whether or not she gets elected.

Ice-floe-dependent species like walrus, seals, and polar bears may largely be out of business soon. Many fish and shellfish species that like colder water are moving north, but how far can they go before there isn't any more continental shelf? Others end up trapped climbing mountainsides watching their habitat size shrink as they go up.

And what is going to happen to many migratory bird species that like the polar regions? Many are already hard-pressed because of changes in their southern ranges caused by human activities.
