Thanks, but no!  Rod and I go way back.  We have not agreed on much for about 20 years.  But I think (hope) we both enjoy the disagreement, the debate, the banter - all without name calling, fingers, and the like.

p.s.  (Ok, with a bit of snarkiness thrown in now and then, but not direct insults.)

They hired Cuomo and countless other hacks in the general time frame of "after Brazille."  I don't think that this sort of thing indicates that CNN uses ethics as a lodestone for anything.

Quick google shows half a dozen personalities from Fox who have been fired.  Looks like the general crime is sexual harassment though, not pure political hackery.

I don't watch CNN much, so I don't have much opinion of their Haley reporting, but I can tell you this. CNN has a vast ethics compliance department and takes ethics seriously. Like any large corporation does, if for no other reason than the cost of unethical behavior. For example, FOX is facing a colossal defamation lawsuit from Dominion. If Dominion wins, not likely, to be honest, it will cost Fox news big. In any case, just defending against the suit is costly enough.

I don't subscribe to the theory that CNN, the NYT, and WaPo were pushing a "collusion lie." They were reporting on the story, and the right created a narrative of the "Russia Hoax" to discredit any investigation or reporting. So, of course, you had this back-and-forth where one side is reporting, and the other is calling all of it "fake news."

Yes, Mueller found no evidence of collusion, and ultimately Trump was never charged with anything. But was all the journalistic reporting "fake news?" Hardly. The Mueller report did say that the Trump campaign had improper contacts with Russia and even accepted some offers of assistance. The report also said there were multiple acts by Trump where he improperly used the influence of office to interfere with and obstruct the investigation, which is not how an innocent man acts. The report did not exonerate Trump. The person genuinely responsible for the Russia probe and its fallout is Trump, not the journalists.
We disagree.  CNN and the other outlets beat the drum of Russian collusion for over two years.  There was never any doubt expressed in the press.  Trumps guilt was a foregone conclusion.

Just for grins, google "CNN the walls are closing in" and watch any of the dozens of clips from CNN.  I think they knew the dossier and the whole collusion story was BS, but they ran with it anyway.  In news nowadays, left and right of course, the narrative is everything.  If CNN had no knowledge that the story was bogus, they did no real investigation, and were willfully blind.  This is just as bad.  The collusion story was received as truth by CNN and the other left biased press because they hated Trump so much.  There has been plenty of serious analysis that draws this conclusion.

Please note that Trump caused his own mess with obstruction.  These are entirely separate issues.  Even so, as much as I despise him, he was framed on the Russian collusion story, and the press is complicit.

Rolling Stone seems to have paywalled Matt Taibi's writing from 2018 - 2020 about the Russian collusion hoax and press complicity, but I think it was compelling analysis.  Have you read it?  I've linked to it before.

That said, here's what legal experts are saying about the Dominion suit against Fox:
"‘It’s a major blow’: Dominion has uncovered ‘smoking gun’ evidence in case against Fox News, legal experts say":

"Rebecca Tushnet, the Frank Stanton Professor of First Amendment Law at Harvard Law School, described Dominion’s evidence as a “very strong” filing that “clearly lays out the difference between what Fox was saying publicly and what top people at Fox were privately admitting.” "Tushnet said that in all of her years practicing and teaching law, she had never seen such damning evidence collected in the pre-trial phase of a defamation suit. “I don’t recall anything comparable to this,”

"David Korzenik, an attorney who teaches First Amendment law and represents a number of media organizations, said that the filing showed Dominion’s case against Fox News has serious teeth."
"Korzenik stressed that while the law allows for bias and ratings-seeking behavior by media outlets, it does not allow for the publication of material one knows to be false. The filing, Korzenik said, “certainly puts Fox in the actual malice crosshairs and puts them in real jeopardy.”

"RonNell Andersen Jones, a professor and media law scholar at the University of Utah, described the evidence as “pretty voluminous” and said that she too had never seen evidence like it collected in a high-profile defamation case against an outlet as enormous as Fox.

“This is a pretty staggering brief,” Jones said. “Dominion’s filing here is unique not just as to the volume of the evidence but also as to the directness of the evidence and the timeline of the evidence.”

“This ‘out of the horse’s mouth’ evidence of knowing falsity is not something we often see,” Jones added. “When coupled with the compelling storyline that Dominion is telling about motivation — the evidence that at least some key players in the organization were actively looking to advance some election denialism in order to win back viewers who had departed — it makes for a strong actual malice storyline.”

"It also showed attempts to crack down on fact-checking election lies. On one occasion, Carlson demanded that Fox News White House correspondent Jacqui Heinrich be fired after she fact-checked a Trump tweet pushing election fraud claims."

Save the stress on your keyboard regarding Dominion Rod!  Trump is guilty as sin, and Fox appears to have been entirely complicit.  We agree on that.  I would love to see Dominion continue winning!   Please recall that the Big Lie of a stolen election is something I mocked as it was happening.

That said, we've got to the point of repeating ourselves, but I did want to make sure you do not think I am giving Trump or Fox a pass.

I suspect that you and James understand that CNN is biased as hell.  It is pretty clear that the real problem you both have with my position is that I claim they are just as biased and unethical as Fox.  I understand your position.  J

Hi James:

I agree.  I think that outfits like CNN and Fox both lost track of this distinction, at least in the Trump years and going forward.   One could argue that the outlets are merely reflecting the wishes of their respective consumers, but that begs the question.  Independent journalism is critical to a free republic, and I am afraid that CNN, Fox and the like no longer behave independently.  Rather they present the narrative demanded by their most loyal consumers.  Not surprising that their approval and trust ratings are in the tank.

The Russian investigation happened because of the Trump campaign's improper contact and conduct with Russians. The investigation would never have happened if not for the eagerness of Trump and his cronies to use Russian disinformation.

When saying the press was complicit in framing Trump, we must be careful: are we talking about political commentary or investigative journalism? There is a crucial difference.
You are absolving the team that put together and socialized the dossier of any wrongdoing?  I really do not understand why.

Mass Shootings in the USA

Ok, I hate to even touch this post with a ten foot pole, because I oppose murder, mass shootings, and white supremacy as much as you do.  Still:

"The advocacy group labeled 25 murders in 2022 as "extremist-related," with 18 of those "committed in whole or part for ideological motives."

Why did you post this?  1 murder is too many, of course, but 25 or 18 is not a whole lot of murders.  I googled that the total number of murders in 2022 at being 26,000+.  So, about 1 in a thousand murders was committed by white supremacists.  That is 18 or 25 too many, and law enforcement should take steps to bring the perps to justice and prevent future murders where possible.

But still, why did you post this?

Basically, what you have provided so far that you think is evidence amounts to you spouting something out of your mouth, and nothing more.  smile
Here is one big difference between you and me Richard.  When a friend like James, who has shot straight with me on this forum for about 20 years claims that he has insight into the ethics practices and administration at CNN, I believe him.

Do you really doubt him, or are you just being an ass?  I believe James 100% based upon the totality of decades of interaction between us.

There are zillions of reasons why James is compelled to be vague.  Maybe it is a friend or family member of his who works at CNN, and I am sure you would agree that it would be highly unorthodox for James to name him or her in a public forum.  Maybe it is a client.  Maybe James used to work there.   There are countless reasons why discretion is mandatory.  Maybe I am hyper sensitive about this sort of thing because of my profession.  But James' unwillingness to divulge the source of his insight does not impact his credibility at all, in my opinion.

I am reminded of our recent dialog where you refused to post a picture of yourself.  You have apparently never posted a picture on line (according to you) and you know what, I believe you.  I am sure you have your reasons.  I am assuming it is because you are extremely jealous of your privacy, or something like that.  So, given that backdrop, why are you so unwilling to just accept that James has some insight here, and leave it at that?  Jim

FWIW, I believe him, even though the statement is unsubstantiated.  Like I said before, we approach our interactions with others differently.
