A very good question, but not for gov't worshipping leftists....Posted By James Brown |

I see the joke, even without a wink. By that metric the Blue states dominate in receipts, $3.5T to $2.6T
I think that is the least critical metric, although as a federalist, I could demand that each of the 50 co-equal states get 1/50th of the budget sent down to the state level.
Just kidding, that would be pretty unfair. I personally like the metric of federal spending per capita, rather than spending per dollar of tax revenue received, just because it seems fairer. States are groups of people. High tax payers ought not get as much direct assistance back. So, a state with lots of rich people should get less per dollar received, according to this way of thinking. A state with lots of rich people should also get less federal assistance according to the assistance per/capita metric, and they do.
My only dispute with you is that you bring these factoids up now and then as an offensive weapon to point out the hypocrisy of righties who demand less welfare, when their states are net beneficiaries. I don't think that is particularly fair to the people of red states, for many reasons listed above. I agree about the hypocrisy though. Did you notice that all states are net beneficiaries now? That was apparently not the case in 2004, according to the arrogant law prof. I linked to.
It would be interesting to discuss why the deepest blue states are also the richest overall. Cause vs. effect. I would argue that education and opportunity drive wealth, and wealth plus education and opportunity cause liberal points of view (now, not always) and that makes states like CA and NY deep blue. I would argue against the opposite, that liberal policies create education, opportunity and wealth...resulting in rich blue states. Frankly, I think that historical, geographic, and demographic reasons have a lot more to do with opportunity and wealth than liberal v. conservative policies. CA vs. MS is not a fair fight based upon history, natural resources, geography, demographics and so on.
But I have no data today. As Greg would say, I am definitely pulling this last conclusion out of my ass.
