Well, he knew it two or more weeks ago when those sailors were being airlifted off the carrier and when the Navy made its announcement about on the 26th. He didn't have any problems with that, now did he?...

One little breach of trust (like going public with a problem and/or ignoring the chain of command) and you lose that trust, and therefore the command. I've been working for the DoD (mostly Navy) for about 35 years and I can't count the number of times I've seen this sort of thing.
One of my points is that this was already public. CNN had footage of sailors being airlifted off the carrier more than two weeks ago along with the story about it. The same essential information in the captain's letter was already out there for awhile...

And where's the  "acting Navy secretary" now? Defending his decision on conservative talk radio, that's where.
Now another US carrier, the USS Ronald Reagan has an outbreak in its crew. Where'd that leak from? Better fire the captain...

I hope your son will be ok; I would think they're taking every precaution to minimize the potential for an outbreak.
When you think about it, I'd suppose the ships are roughly in the same situation as some of those cruise ships are in since they've got a lot of people contained in the same area for a protracted period of time. I'm sure it's a difficult situation for all...
