I'd feel better about George Will's editorial if I could see an alternative in the culture of Washington DC. The sad fact is Speaker Boehner and Senator McConnel are just as limp-wristed when it comes to actually setting limits on the scope of government. Obama won a second term because the Republicans ran a weak candidate. America outside the beltway is alien to both "Ds" and "Rs".

No, it's not your chilly air or your accent. The reason many now shy away from exporting is the result of a change in the way the U.S. government treats even inadvertent errors in customs declarations and paperwork. The CBP now asses fines for minor errors and will press criminal charges if given half a chance. The post office warns:

"INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THIS FORM (Remove this page prior to completing form.)
Please print this form in English using blue or black ink, pressing firmly so all information transfers to all copies. Complete the declaration fully and legibly; otherwise, delay and inconvenience may result for the addressee. A false or misleading declaration may lead to a fine or seizure of the item and additional penalties."

Most people aren't too keen on rummaging through a 900-page document to find some obscure commodity reference for the customs form only to risk a $500 fine (or worse) to sell an eyepiece worth $100. The federal government loves exporters, especially when they are the likes of GE or Boeing. The smaller birds are used for target practice. 8)

AP FF on a TEC Scope

It would probably work optically, but the mechanical design is quite different. The TEC FF attaches directly to the threaded end of the focuser draw tube. It looks like the A-P part has a dovetail and would need a special adapter.

A large portion of the electorate, maybe a majority, actually admire Obama's brand of Chicago thug politics. Liberals hide their true feelings and sugar-coat the tyranny with terms like "vigorous government" or "progressive realignment". The increasingly ignorant masses just keep their heads down and hope the lotto will pay off. We are rapidly transitioning from a Republic governed by laws, to a system of warring tribes where might makes right and "is" means whatever "they" say it means. 8)

Cynical? Hell yes I'm cynical. Ben Franklin was right -- we couldn't keep it.

Without a working Second Amendment, the rest don't really matter all that much, do they? Our President held a news conference the other day where he stated that upon taking office, he promised to keep the American people safe and to uphold the Constitution. As a "constitutional scholar", his knowledge of the document seems limited because the powers prescribed for his office don't include either of those functions. Then he said we had to live with "tradeoffs" between freedom and security -- again something that is not mentioned anywhere in the Constitution.

We the People are supposed to provide for our defense and likewise we are charged with enforcing the limits on government that the Constitution prescribes. If we fail to deal with a problem when it's small, should we be surprised when years later it has grown into a much larger problem?

Computing sidereal gear ratios

Their gear ratios are close (as would be expected) to the sidereal rate. The drive uses standard gears and can only approximate the length of the mean sidereal day, 1436.068 minutes.
