Jim, your reasoned approach is hopeful and optimistic as one would expect from you and I don't disagree with much of what you've stated here but I believe the average Fox news viewer lacks your cognitive skills and will likely fixate on the don't "hide under your bed" attitude for their takeaway on what Barr said. In my town, the Fox fans have been acting that way pretty-much all the way around...Originally Posted by James Brown
His rhetoric was poor in that instance. But here is why I agree with him:
"Attorney General William Barr late Wednesday suggested that the federal government in May should begin relaxing some of the "draconian" social distancing restrictions imposed throughout the U.S.
Barr said in an interview with Fox News that the U.S. had to be "very careful" to ensure some of the measures being "adopted are fully justified, and there are not alternative ways of protecting people" amid the novel coronavirus outbreak.
"I think, you know, when this — when this period of time is — at the end of April expires, I think we have to allow people to adapt more than we have and not just tell people to go home and hide under the bed, but allow them to use other ways — social distancing and other means — to protect themselves," he said."
I think that we will relax some measures, business closures for example, based upon local, hopefully in May, certainly in June. People will slowly start to frequent restaurants again. You can go back to work. I am counting on the US being ready to test, trace and isolate - along the lines of Korea by then. There are a lot of smart people working on this.
Regarding the second wave - of course this is possible. But the world is our laboratory, and it will be interesting to see how things go in Korea, Israel, China, Spain and Italy. These countries are ahead of us on the curve, and there will be pressure to cautiously return to normalcy there too. We'll have a better idea by May what works and what does not work in the slow progression to normalcy. The therapeutics research continues too of course. There could very well be new therapies like the one out of Israel you mentioned or old therapies that have been adequately demonstrated to work pretty good by May.
I'm not suggesting that we sound an "All Clear" bell on May 1, followed by a massive orgy in the streets of NYC! I did not get the impression from the article that this is what Barr is talking about either.
