This one is from about 20 miles outside of Glacier National Park. An interesting geologic feature in GNP is rock assemblage. The older rock has been thrust on top of the younger. In GNP the fault picture here is horizontal. In this shot the fault is still at a high angle. The rock on the left is Cretaceous and is about 60 million years old. The rock on the right is Pre-Cambrian and is about 1.5 billion years old.

Been about twenty years since I braved the DC crowds to see the best fireworks show in the country. I'm thinking about doing it this year though. A good friend of mine works at one of the EPA offices that has a great view of them.

DC has the best backdrops/foreground for fireworks.

NASA's Final Shuttle: The End of an Error?

It's a sad day for NASA and the US. Constellation was cancelled for political reasons. It was not as over budget and behind schedule as we were told. This has left the US with no manned space program. While I do support private industry space travel, it's in its infancy. I can't get excited about us hitching a, $50 million per ride, launch with the Russians. I bet it's at least 15 years before we see another NASA manned space launch.

NASA is always such an easy target. Yet it makes up less than 0.5% of the overall budget. If the government cleaned up food stamp abuse and fraud, they could double NASA's budget and still have money left over.

No manned space flight. No JWST. Wasn't Obama supposed to "restore science"? We might as well shut NASA down.

Obama - The Last Thing To Do Is Raise Taxes

One thing I haven't heard much about in this deficit debate is that there are already tax hikes set to kick in on businesses,big and small,in 2013 or 2014 to help pay for the unaffordable health care act. The democrats want more tax hikes now added on top of these. How much is enough for them?
