Covid-19 data and graphs

I'm sure the governors of Texas and California and elsewhere would likely disagree on many points with Jim's analysis. Beyond that, China is ahead of the curve again both in reducing infections and in vaccinating its military:
"According to a CanSino statement, clinical trials of the new vaccine have shown a "good safety profile" with initial results indicating that Ad5-nCoV had potential to prevent diseases caused by SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus strain that causes Covid-19." "CanSino had previously announced in May that the Canadian government was allowing human trials of the Ad5-nCoV vaccine." Perhaps that's what international cooperation can lead to with the appropriate leadership in the WH...

Even if you could somehow contain the deaths in some uniform way as you describe, which defies everything that is going on right now, what you cannot control is the devastation on ERs and hospitals as well as the incredible suffering inflicted on the public by this disease. I had to spend three hours in a virus airborne infection isolation room until results came back that I did not have COVID-19. That alone was a horrific experience knowing that I was Sleeping g in a room the COVID-19 patients had been in recently waiting for life-saving treatment. I am extremely lucky that the ER and hospital I was in was not overrun by COVID-19 patients as I may not have survived a delay. Many deaths in cities that are now being overrun like Dallas and Phoenix will have nothing to do with COVID-19 but the lack of medical care at ER’s because of it.

This virus has a life and a mind of its own and it’s not going to be managed by simple equations like taking the total number of deaths per year and dividing it by 365. It is much closer to a hostile adversary striking at cities with a disruption that is far more devastating than simply picking off a few people here and there on a daily basis.

We are not even treating this at the national level with the seriousness that it demands and I guarantee you from what I have seen and experienced we are going to pay and enormous price that probably did not have to happen. This will go down as one of the truly incredible tragedies primarily caused at the political level as idiotic as that sounds.

I have to go in for another heart procedure this coming week, and I’m obviously not looking forward to it but I am grateful that it’s even available to me...at least for now

Russ

PS I fully expect to recover because of the life-saving work done in our ERs and hospitals.
I wish you and everyone on the forum a happy and healthy fourth of July. I hope you have an uneventful recovery from your heart procedure and I'm sure you're wise enough to take the proper precautions to protect yourself. While I don't want to get into the nonsense that you'll read elsewhere in this thread about comparing Covid19 to the flu in younger people, what such comparisons utterly and miserably forget is that these individuals pass it along to those who are more susceptible, ie those in other age groups and/or with comorbidities. Somewhere along the line, they forgot we're in a union...

Jim,
Like you, I'm in the market for the long haul but I don't always get the "why" behind the reaction to the daily news stories such as the one posted specific to Trump.
Frankly, I'm amazed, although pleased, the market is doing as well as it is, at least for now. States are getting hammered by Covid outbreaks and that's got to adversely affect the economy and therefore the market at some point.

"Plus the behavior of the herd matters.  Masks, hand washing, social distancing and so on are behaviors that in combination with a lower herd immunity threshold could explain the NY and Italy graphs."
Behaviors you don't see in states where cases are spiking in many instances and where bars opened early on like in Florida, California and Texas..

Jim
People wear masks in stores, banks, offices and buildings where stipulated but socialize regularly without them.  In my (red) neck of the woods, Trumptoids party without masks in their garages have Trump flags with their American flags. If you try talking stats with one of them, they don't want to hear it...PS: What the heck happened to the market today? It was up more than 500 points and it and the Nasdaq tanked in the last minutes of trading. Why?

Found the reason on the market tanking today: "News of reclosing in coronavirus ravaged states, including parts of California, partly helped to derail the day's strong opening gains."

""Since we don't have a consistent message in our state, let alone our country, there's even more confusion."
That's called leadership. Since we don't have any, we get what we get.
Republican senator Joni Ernst highly criticized former president Obama for failed leadership because TWO people died from Ebola. She was asked last week if the 130,000 dead from Covid19 indicated failed leadership from our current president. Her answer? Wear your masks and socially distance. But what about failed leadership by president Trump? Her response: wear your mask and socially distance...
