Nice work on the planets, Jim. I find those images to be more representative of a natural image, similar to those in my 16" on nights of excellent seeing, rather than the heavily enhanced images I typically see on amateur forums...

Instead of students moving between classrooms, teachers will change classes, and students have the option to do 100% remote learning. I think Abbot opened us back up too soon, but thank goodness he can admit his mistakes, learn from them, and adjust accordingly. I am so tired of the tendency for politicians never to admit their mistakes and instead double-down on lousy policy and ideas. I didn't vote for Abbot, but he's certainly earned my respect in this regard.
My sentiments about Abbot, too. I'm amazed but pleased to know there's at least one politician who can admit and correct his own mistakes, especially during the Trump presidency. DeSantis in Florida is the exact opposite, doubling down on any stupid stuff he does.

Jim,
You haven't taken into consideration the latest American response to the situation. For an update:
"at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. ... Videos of the band Smash Mouth playing to a packed crowd, most who sang ... “Fuck that COVID shit!”."

There you have it, the latest team Trumptoid summary....

What's questionable in the equation is the data from certain states like Texas and Georgia. They're bad now and they may be even worse because the data may be skewed to make them appear better than they truly are...

Secondarily, because of the stupid idiotic anti-vaccine lobby, only 50-60% of people are evidently willing to get vaccinated.

We will never get herd immunity at this rate.  The virus will continue to circulate and kill people for years and years.  Americans have to include the stupidest people on the planet.  It's sad and disappointing.  Another thing to be ashamed of as Americans.
In terms of efficacy:"A two-dose vaccine released in April 2021 under full licensure, with acceptable reactogenicity rate and estimated efficacy at 60% to 70%. A one-dose vaccine released some time afterward, with a very low reactogenicity rate and efficacy up to 90%.Jul 31, 2020"
Vaccine Experts Sound Off On Current COVID-19 Developments
We really won't know until the vaccines are evaluated by clinical trials and the results are peer-reviewed and published.
More worrisome is the anticipated compliance rate among Americans. I note Australia is going to make it mandatory for its citizens...

This statement right out of the box in your 2nd link was perfect:   ex-felons who are registered overwhelmingly register as Democrats

I'm glad I didn't have to waste my time looking it up, since you made my point for me.

Was it intentional?  LOL smile
Depends on the state, moreover, I'm going with the GOP rep who stated, " You can’t assume how they would vote or that they will even register to vote.”

Still, the resurgence in Spain, France, and elsewhere in the EU calls into question my earlier optimism about early herd immunity plus residual immunity from other corona viruses (common cold) being in play.  It will be interesting to see how this works out as we head into the autumn with schools reopening in certain locales.

The good news is that deaths in the EU and East Coast are coming in at low, and if I may be cold-hearted, "tolerable" rates.  See column 3.  Here in Colorado the Covid 19 death rate is down to about 2 per day.

Jim
I liked the way Cuomo framed it last night on CNN. He likened the situation to that of a sinking boat. All though some of the flooding has slowed, the water is still coming in and the boat is still sinking. Instead of having 40,000 cases per day in the USA, we have 30,000 or so new cases per day.
A lot of people won't use masks and when we eventually get a vaccine, they won't get it...
