It is indeed!  I'm partial to "White Rascal" in the summer and "The Reverend"  On a cold winters day around the fire.   In a small glass of course!

"Joanna Harper, a medical physicist in Portland, Oregon, has conducted research into the effect of testosterone blockers on transgender women runners like herself."
"In 2015, she published the first study of transgender women and athletic performance and found that trans women ran at least 10 percent slower after beginning hormones. And, relatively speaking, they did no better against cisgender female runners than they had previously done against cisgender men."
Then the recent study: "A new study suggests transgender women maintain an athletic advantage over their cisgender peers even after a year on hormone therapy."
"The results, published last month in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, could mean the current one-year waiting period for Olympic athletes who are transitioning is inadequate."
“For the Olympic level, the elite level, I'd say probably two years is more realistic than one year,” said the study's lead author, Dr. Timothy Roberts, a pediatrician and the director of the adolescent medicine training program at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. “At one year, the trans women on average still have an advantage over the cis women," he said, referring to cisgender, or nontransgender, women."

Lia Thompson is significantly taller, and has a significantly greater wingspan than any woman swimmer in the NCAA.  This provides a huge advantage.  She went from being ranked about 500 as a male competitor to #1 as a woman in her main freestyle events.  She may be taking testosterone suppressants now, but she grew to full size and strength as a man.  This is where I think the NCAA will eventually draw the line, at which gender you went through puberty.

Size is a huge advantage in many sports.   Testosterone suppressants might affect endurance and muscle mass, but not height and arm length.

Some of the European cycling tours now have two classifications.  "Women's" for biological women and "Open", for anyone else.

The bolded part is quite possibly true in most instances.  It is certainly not true in the cases that get national attention, like Lia Thompson who was #500 in D1 as a Man and #1 a year later as a female.   Some time ago, biological boys took 1 and 2 in the 100M in the Connecticut girls state championship track meet.   This was extremely unfair to the girls, and maybe life changing, since the girls who lost were running to impress college coaches and maybe get scholarships in some instances.

Hi James:  I mentioned this last week in a reply to Greg.  I often agree with Richard's opinions, but his delivery is usually so laced with name calling, other insults and the like, directed at people I consider friends, that I'm usually not interested in engaging on the merits of whatever issue is allegedly under discussion.  Richard must know this.   It is obvious that he posts here to heckle, insult, twist, tap-dance, and obfuscate more than anything else.  It is kind of weird that we indulge him at all.

As I've stated 100 times if I've stated it once, you have your methods of namecalling which are snide, sneering, sarcastic, and mocking, while I'm more direct and will just call you out directly and tell you and others to f off.

But there is no difference between You and I.

You simply try to disguise your remarks a bit differently.  If you think that makes your responses adult and mature, it doesn't.

In fact it just makes you petty, and indicates that the only one who you are fooling is yourself.

But hey, you're free to whine about it incessantly.  wink
You've said the exact same thing about me, quite recently.  I think it is hilarious.  No rational person could miss the obvious, huge, and important differences between the way me or James, and you behave in this forum.  For a long time I thought it was an act on your part.   Now I am pretty sure that your posts here reflect obvious, huge, and important differences in our actual personalities and demeanors.   The fact that you don't see this is both funny and tragically sad.   Nothing anyone can do about it though.

Waste of time explaining this, but the huge difference is obvious.   I (and to a much much lesser extent) James or Russ etc. can be snide in response to your provocation.   You on the other hand are gratuitously rude in response to no provocation at all.  You are simply an internet asshole virtually all the time.

Consider this thread.  Rod posted an unloaded and non-confrontational reply to Russ:  "Hmm, I'd have look into the effects of the hormone therapy involved in transgender treatments before I can make an informed opinion on this."

You immediately jump in with full personal attack "asshole" mode:  "Well, just because You personally never developed any musculature greater than any girls around you in junior high school or High School, doesn't amount to a hill of beans."  "If you can't figure that out, that truly doesn't surprise me.  If you have a brother or a male friend you may notice a difference between them and a woman standing next to them, but maybe not since your leftism seems to cloud even the most rational of thoughts with you."

You attacked Rod for no reason at all.  This is not tit for tat.   This is not any noble defense of the world from leftism. (Ha Ha, as if you or this forum mattered).  No, this is just an asshole picking a fight where none existed before.  No one else on the forum does that very often, if ever.  I bet you would have a very tough time, it might be impossible, finding a post where another forum participant simply attacked you or anyone else for no reason and with no provocation.   I could easily post 100 instances of you doing precisely that.   It is what you do.  On this forum, you treat people with a common interest, people who are willing to be your friend, like shit.  You are simply an internet asshole and you post only because you enjoy the conflict so much.  We indulge you.  You are nothing like anyone else who posts here.

How, in any sane political system, are financial donations allowed to be made to sitting judges at any level?  Judges are not (supposed to be) political figures.  The judiciary is meant to be independent, isn't it?  Three branches and all that...

Dave
Hi Dave:  I think our judiciary is quite independent.   The press is trying to make Thomas out to be beholden to right wing donors, but there is no evidence that this is the case.   The simple fact is that Thomas has a conservative judicial philosophy, and he has ruled in every instance in accordance with his core conservative judicial philosophy.   This is no different than RBG, Sotomayor, Brown-Jackson or others adhering to their liberal judicial philosophies.

Thomas has not accepted cash donations.  He has accepted trips and lodging from wealthy conservatives.   This is not a great look for Thomas, but there is no indication whatsoever that it affects his judicial outlook, which was well known, long before he was appointed to the Supreme Court.   There are new disclosure rules in place.   It will take some time for the Justices to make sure their disclosures are compliant, because there will be immense press scruitiny.

Rod has a weakness for Thomas bashing, because their philosophies are so opposite.   That does not mean that Thomas has ever been credibly accused of corruption at any level.

Unfortunately, I can't hang around to explore this - Gotta plane to catch.    Hope your air quality is not too miserable...  We had that a few years ago when large California fires were burning and it is really crummy.   Jim

The fires are in very remote areas but there are some isolated native communities near some of them...many have had to evacuate.
The smoke is affecting many millions of people, however.
There is a low pressure system that has been stuck over Nova Scotia for a week or more.  The backside airflow is coming down over the eastern Great Lakes and on into New England, New Jersey and New York...  If this system moves off the smoke will blow into the mostly uninhabited North Atlantic region....but when will this low move?
Dave
They are permitted to have lives and friends outside of their jobs.   That said, our Justices are a lot less wealthy than our congressmen, women, and former presidents.   Singling out the Justices is misplaced.   Do Canadian politicians and judges take oaths of poverty?   I doubt it.    Now I really gotta go, glad to hear it is not too smoky in your neck of Canada.
