If I only had one telescope.

I have been thinking about what the best general purpose astronomy telescope is under $3,000. Two of my lifetime favorites have been the Tak FS 102 and the TEC 6. I no longer own either and am in the market for the perfect general purpose scope. Any thoughts?

The ultimate general purpose scope? After all these long years, it is STILL the good, old C8. A few accessories and it can tackle almost anything and do at least a credible job with almost anything.

Question about C8 Deluxe RA worm gear backlash

Posted By Rod Mollise

William Malona said:

Hello everyone..I have noticed a slight amount of backlash in the RA axis of my 8 year old C8 Deluxe mount, so I have tried to reduce the play by tightening the worm gear mount against the worm wheel. I rocked the forks in a east/west direction with the RA adjustment knob locked, and felt some play. So I cleaned all the old grease off the gear and worm, regreased with some high temp lithium white gease and remounted the motor assembly again. I have tried to keep the worm gear parallel against the wheel, not too tight to restrict movement, or add binding friction which is bad. But too loose is also bad. So, how do you know what is the correct amount of force to keep the 2 gears engaged, but not too loose or tight? I have read that you should be able to pull the motor back some, and release the worm from the wheel gear. There are 2 set screws/bolts that apply pressure, I am just unsure of the correct amount of torque to apply. Thanks for the help. Bill

By C8, I assume you mean "Celestar" 8. How do you know what is "right"? Minimum play, but no binding. Carefully check to make sure that there is no stalling/binding _anywhere_ along the 360 degrees of the drive motion. Some play is in fact "normal" and will not hurt pea turkey. Better too loose than too tight.

Need some advice

Posted By Rod Mollise

Bill Madewell said:

Guys,
I bought a Meade 2080 SCT, but it did not come with a rear cell attachment. The scope is in perfect condition by checking it over.
Looking at it when I got it, it has 2 threaded areas, inner and outer threads, and a plastic plug was placed into it keepout the dust.
So at this moment, I have NO way to moount a star diagnal or other attachment to it. I checked A-mart for a long time to see if anybody was selling a rear cell, and I have looked over Anacortes, and they do not sell such an aattachment. So my question is, where can I find this rear cell for sale ?
Any help will be most appreciated. I suspect that the scope was made back in the Mid-1980's....

Thankyou ,
Bill

What you need is called a "visual back"...one is a common item with any astro-dealer...

iOptron Minitower and C9.25

Do you think the iOptron Minitower can handle a C9.25 or is it going to suffer from major shakes?

Thanks for your insights...

Not only will it not handle it...don't expect to be impressed by the go-to "accuracy"... wink

Newbie questions:

Gentlemen... very interested in the collective knowledge this form holds...My scope; 9.25" Celestron, with ASGT mount.. I just obtained as older D30 not to be confused with the 30D CANON makes. Nice SLR with very low actuations.. also purchased the new True-2 adapter for CANON which replaces the T-ring.. my questions are many, being new at Digital photography, is there a good book anyone can suggest that will detail, exposure times, settings, etc... also any tricks you have stumbled across in the search for clear focused photos. Last question: What is the Stelleto (sp?) unit I have heard about in aiding a sharp focus.. thank you so much for any help, John M in Astoria, OR. (no it's not raining at the present moment)

There are plenty of good books out there, but the best place to start, IMHO, is STILL Mike Covington's _Astrophotography for the Amateur_.

Matched Eyepieces for Binoviewing?

Posted By Rod Mollise

Michael Tencza said:

In the used section of Amart I often see ads for "matched pairs" of eyepieces for binoviewing. Is there a method for "matching eyepieces" for binoviewing or is this like "semi-apo" where people use the term, but it is essentially meaningless.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I use no-name/store brand Plossls frequently in my Denks, and they work just fine. Get a pair where there is a large difference in focal length or eye relief of AFOV, and you could have trouble, but it is not at all necessary to use hand/cherry picked expensive pairs.

crazy gps?

Posted By Rod Mollise

Gordon Gower said:

We have a new Celestron CPC 11 here at Natural Bridges National Monument in SE Utah. I have been having trouble with pointing issues. I just upgraded the HC and Motor control software to the latest version. Last night when I rolled it out, the GPS showed me the wrong time by one hour but also the wrong date by one day. I suspect the one hour time issue relates to resetting the time zone, but I have not had any luck changing that yet. I have no clue why the GPS would be one day off. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas? If I can't figure this out I will call tech support next week, but I would like to get it up and running before then.

Thanks,

Make sure you reset the time-zone. But the bottom line is this will only affect how close you come to _alignment stars_ and go-tos to the Moon and planets. Basic pointing to deep sky objects and stars will not be affected.

Another point is the technology of the 12mm Nagler type 2 has been eclipsed by the type 4 and Ethos, but buy how much?

DEEEEEEP Thoughts!
Thanks,
Steve

How much? In technical terms, "a whole lot." LOL

I had zero qualms about selling my 12-mm Type 2. The Ethos features not just a wider AFOV, but more contrast and sharpness.
