Hmmm, you cooperate with an investigation and you get to plead guilty to two misdemeanour tax crimes and a gun offence.
Okay, can we finally put to rest the Hunter's laptop conspiracies? You guys on the right will need to find something or someone else to complain about. Mostly a nothing burger.
"The two misdemeanour tax charges stem from a failure to pay more than $100,000 (£78,000) in taxes in both 2017 and 2018. A former justice department official told CBS, the BBC's US partner, that these amounts would lead to most clients being charged with misdemeanours, but "in the jail time range".
In a statement, Joe Biden said that neither he nor Jill Biden would comment further on Hunter Biden's case.
The gun charge stems from a 2018 possession of a firearm while a drug user.
In a 2021 book, the younger Mr Biden admitted to being a heavy user of crack cocaine at that time.
But he reportedly said "no" on a federal form asking if he was "an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug or any other controlled substance". Lying on these forms can lead to jail time."
Of course, the right will say this is an example of a two tiered justice system but compared to trump's crimes it's small potatoes.
Jim, I've been reading around this morning from many sources. I think the right and the center will acknowledge that this is a sweetheart deal for Hunter. It is, undeniably a sweetheart deal.
Some are noticing that the deal more than undercuts the left's anti-gun rhetoric. Hunter could have gotten 10 years for lying on his weapons permit application. Instead, he is not even prosecuted on that charge under this deal. The anti-gun lobby is going to have this thrown in their faces for years, along the lines of, "you say we need new laws, but you refuse to prosecute the laws we have on the books!"
The perception of a two tiered justice system by everyone except the mainstream press and Biden's core supporters is, along with many other issues, going to doom Biden to lose in '24 in my opinion. I am not happy with the prospect of Trump winning again. The D's need to intervene and get a candidate who is not 80 years old and who does not have the baggage Biden does.
Maybe Newsome? Someone else? A nice liberal housecat with a penchant for foreign policy?
