Upgrades to a Meade LX-5

Posted By Rod Mollise

David Frank said:

A question from a rookie with too much time on my hands: I currently have an LX-5 2120 that appears to be in good working order- just bought it about 6 weeks ago and due to the lousy weather in the Puget Sound area, I have yet to get it outside for a test run. If I were to try to upgrade (without inordinate difficulty), what would my options be? I was once advised that the LX-6 base would interchange with little difficulty - this seems to me, after reading a copy of the owner’s manual, to be quite a leap forward, but not sure if the digital setting circles and encoders would just "bolt on" to my current forks. My best estimate is the LX-6 was predominantly an early to mid-90's model.

What is the next newest in the progression of Meade models that I might look at without going to a GEM? I've heard of LX90 and LX200. Anyone have some advice as to how far forward I might go without needing to be a machinist or an electrical engineer?

Dave

What would be your goal in doin' said upgrade? Frankly, you'd be a lot better off puttin' this on a new go-to GEM rather than foolin' around with a castoff drive base from an LX6 or an LX200 Classic. If you are mainly interested in a computer, get yerself an Argo Navis from JMI (they still support the LX5) and keep on ROCKIN' with that classic scope.

Bottom line on this? Best to ask Herb rather than speculate.

Can a mirror lock be added to older LX200?

chuck hull said:

I recently acquired an older 10" LX200 and was wondering if a mirror lock can be added to it?

Yes, but not easily. You will have to drill and tap holes in the rear cell for mirror stablizing bolts...not recommended for those of us as mechanically challenged as yours truly. LOL

Looking to get a White Light Solar Filter

I'm looking to get a White Light Solar filter for my meade ETX-70AT.
Does anyone have a suggestion?

I prefer glass filters...and my fave is the JMB Identiview (Anacortes sells 'em).

Cooling AND Thermals in SCT's

Posted By Rod Mollise

Nicholas Seiflow said:

As a long time user of SCT's I (like many) am constantly aware of two thermal issues. Firstly, cooling the optics to a state of equilibrium with the ambient temperature, and secondly, dealing with currents INSIDE the tube.

Honestly, there is one factor that is probably more important than anything else (once the scope has initially acclimated and assuming temperatures are not dropping rapidly throughout the night):

Seeing. This is a long focal length telescope. If your seein' ain't what it oughta be, get the focal length down with an f/6.3 reducer corrector and you will be happier.

CGE14 on the CGE mount: Advice?

Posted By Rod Mollise

Ted McPherson said:

Greetings eveybody. I am taking possession of a new CGE14 on the older CGE mount which Celestron is building for me at present. I will take delivery next month.

I've read some reviews off the web and get the same basic message...the optics are flawless and the mount adequate. Most of the reviews regarding the mount were written circa 2006. I know the mount and controller have had some of the bugs worked out, and I expect the goto to be more accurate. Is this an erroneous assumption on my part?

No...it _is_ more accurate. The big breakthrough software wise was the calibration star routine, which allows you to add four.

Biggest tip? Don't think of using the setup without a set of Celestron's vibration supression pads.

Why so little MEADE RCX or ACF REVIEWS on the net?

Posted By Rod Mollise

michael green said:

I was just wondering why there is so little reviews on MEADE RCX or ACF scopes out there?Amazing there is little 12 inch,14 inch,16 inch,or even the 20 incher barely mentioned!Where are all the astrophotos if these are supposed to be real gem scopes! Is there anyone out there who has tested these? If you have then your input would be helpful! Thanks!michael

Why no RCX reviews? Because the scopes have been discontinued (except for the 16 and 20-inch GEM models, which may still be available). That happened about a year ago. If you need information on the scopes, try the RCX Yahoogroup. Take a stroll through the files. Alas...it ain't pretty. I was lucky enough to be able to use a 10 RCX that worked right and was impressed. Shame.

What is your dream scope?

Posted By Rod Mollise

Keith Lawson said:

I believe everyone has a dream instrument that is either beyond their bank account or is no longer made or a combination of other factors. So I ask: What is your dream scope and why? No professional observatories please.

Here is mine: A Questar 12. Optical and mechanical perfection! No GOTO but man what an instrument 8) As a lunar/planetary observer this would be an ultimate instrument. Now if I could have it and good seeing to match...

Yeah, and if you wait long enough, it might even cool down enough to show you some good stuff... wink

Me? I can't choose...either a Blue and White Celestron C16 or a Unitron 4-inch Photo Equatorial (with the weight driven drive, please). Yeah, I know both of these are relatively modest, but so be it. I'm a peasant at heart and wouldn't know what do to with the really high-line stuff. LOL

Has anyone observed this very dim globular cluster near M53 in Coma Berenices? I think I was right on its position last night using my 8" dob, at 80x and 120x, but I only saw a hint of light using averted imagination.

Many times. It is dim and it is loose (Shapley-Sawyer Class V). Frankly, it is "OK" visually from Prude Ranch with my 12.5-inch, but not much more than that. wink

Who Already has Their Dream Scope?

Posted By Rod Mollise

larry thaxton said:

Now I have to cut back a little as I have more than I need and while I enjoy them all, can not use each enough to justify having them sitting around. It would be interesting to know who else has "arrived" and why?

Almost NOBODY...for most of us, the Dream Scope is always "the next one." And yet...and yet...maybe I already have my dream scope if I were to be honest about it. The good, old C8. Plenty of aperture to make stuff look sweet from a dark site. Small enough that it can almost qualify as a grab 'n go. Able to do lotsa things from imaging to spectroscopy to photometry to lookin' at the dadgummed Moon for 15-minutes.
