vdB 31 and some Barnard objects

Posted By Charles Hakes

Great job. And lots of background stuff in there. Looks like you caught a meteor next to the spiral galaxy, as I don't see it going all the way across. Couple of questions: How long were your subframes? Is your "L" an IR/UV-blocking? And how wide is the field of view? (Sorry if you have posted this information elsewhere!) Unfortunately my monitor is not big enough to see it all at once.

4 new shots from the weekend

Nice set. Shouldn't those mosquitos have started hibernating by this time of year? This is a one-shot color imager, correct? I especially like the horsehead here. I would have expected a bit more color on stars, etc., especially on M33. Is that a processing thing, or do the stars start to wash out with the "long" exposures?

Nice. You are getting a lot of detail in there.

Tasco 60mm on M31, M32, M110 - P&S Camera

That is great. One of these days I will have to try my old orion 60mm (an f15 though). I have tried our Canon point-and-shoot, but never stacking with it.

M1 expanding over decades animation (real images)

Neat sequence. We are seeing more and more animations now. This one goes back further than most I have seen. There was a cool link on a recent APOD to stars moving in the center of the galaxy.

AVA Flatfielder vs inexpensive EL Sheets for flats

Posted By Charles Hakes

That sounds like an interesting solution. I wonder about how "flat" the manufacturing process really is though. If these are only made to look uniform to your eye, then they are likely flat to at least 1/4 an f stop. But that is not too flat when talking CCD. If you could somehow move around and rotate the screen in front of your aperture while taking a bunch of flats, you might get something pretty good.

Maybe you could get one and try?

Another solution that might be as good or better would be to use one of these offset a few inches to illuminate your T-shirt. ???

ST2000xm vs. ST10xme

Posted By Charles Hakes

I have the ST10xe (non-m version, and was told by SBIG within the last month that the difference in QE wasn't as big as you might think). I need the non-anti-bloom feature to get quantitative numbers, but also like the fact that I can do "color by calculation" (which often gives results that might be different than your typical auto color balance). In practice, I usually do some test exposures using the focus tool to calculate when stars start to saturate, and try to approach, but not exceed that time. (Stars saturate before they bloom.) And as Robert indicated, blooms aren't that big a deal.

Looks great to me, and it DOES look like quite a challenge.

Tiny M108 and friends

Nice shot. Color on the stars looks natural and it looks like lots of those dim background galaxies are peeking through. (I guess the exposure would need to be way longer to get all of them to really jump out.)

Nice shot. Lots of data in there.
