First 1.25" ocular you purchased?

Darian Rachal said:

I was thinking about the first 1.25" ocular I purchased way back in 1971(I was 17). It was a University Optics 40mm Kellner. I paid $9.95ppd.

Wow! $9.95?! You mussa been RICH! LOL

For me it was in 1966, when I put together $4.95 of lawn-mowin' money and sent off to Edmund Scientific for their 6-mm Ramsden to accompany the "1-inch" Kellner and "1/2-inch" Ramsden that came with my Palomar Junior. grin

LX200, Canon Rebel DSLR, & Laptop Setup Help

Posted By Rod Mollise

chuck hull said:

I have the LX200. I have the Canon Rebel DSLR. I have a laptop. Now I want to control the telescope and camera from my laptop. I think I have the camera control part down (DSLR Focus and Nebulosity). Now how do I control the telescope from my laptop? I have an 8 year old copy of The Sky if that will help. If someone has done this setup, can you drop me a note and give me some pointers: Cables, software, change something.

Chuck

Impossible to say. Which telescope? Which TheSky? The lower levels do not allow telescope control.

You'd probably be better off just downloading Cartes du Ciel, which is free.

But where's the color?

That's what my wife says when she sees my H-alpha shots.

I gave up my filter wheel and other filters, as tri-color (narrow- or broad-band) has always been difficult for me.

I like how mono H-alpha does well on emission, but I don't like how I can't get reflection nebs....that's what I have to settle on being a mono-only wimp!

110-minutes (300 sec subs) on M-20, taken with my little Starshoot II mono, Astronomik H-alpha, through my WO 80FD w/WO reducer.

Me? I've discovered I still _just like black and white_. I will pull out the DSLR when I want color...but no filter wheels for my CCD cam...nossir buddy! LOL

This last target points out one difficulty of using the 13 ethos as an exclusive DSO eyepiece--its field is occasionally too big!

That's what the 8 is for! LOL

I'm currently engaged in runnin' through the Herschels again. This time I'm cheatin', using a 12.5-inch and Sky Commander DSCs. I'm still havin' a ball revisitin' all them objects, though, especially since I'm accompanied by Steve O'Meara's fine book, _Herschel 400 Observing Guide_.

Arctic 2009 coldest summer in 50 years.

Doug Peterson said:

You can click on any year archived and see how cold it was. The earliest, 1958 was a bit warmer than 2009 is shaping up to be. In fact, I clicked thru all 50+ years and this summer so far is colder than all 50+ years of data.

And parts of the U.S. were hotter than then been in decades. Which means...nothing. Long term trends are what matters.

digital compass as azmith encoder

Posted By Rod Mollise

daniel gillis said:

Hello,

I have had fairly good use with an inclinometer (US Digital model) as an altitude encoder for my 20" dob.

I have wondered if an inclinometer and some sort of digital compass could be used for my 8" Portaball?

Thanks,
Daniel

'Fraid not. Least I've never seen one accurate enough for astronomical use.

Why people believe

An interesting article by Michael Shermer on what he calls "Agenticity."

This is just the sort of thinking that has creationists quaking in their boots... rationalism!

Interesting article...but I don't think it's that complicated when it comes to religion: We (people) will (as Chris Hitchens has said on numerous occasions) continue to believe in god and goddesses until we lose our fear of death.

When you get beyond the "Christians" who believe they can pray themselves a fortune, that's really it in a nutshell.

Any time I get worried about the Big Sleep, I just think like ol' Sam Clemens did, "I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it." That does it for me but I don't expect it to do it for everybody.

LOL

Jupiter f30 7/10/09

Another morning of good seeing in CT. Image taken with C11, 1.8x Barlow + 2.5" extension, DMK21 at 100% brightness, gain, gamma. RG 30fps, B 15fps, 1min avis. 900frames stacked from RG, 600 for B. Europa was cropped out of this image since it needs to have the RGB aligned separate from the globe which I have not done before. After recovering from a computer crash trying to run Reg5 and IC capture at the same time, I was lucky to take advantage of the seeing. Ironically, the view through the eyepiece was bad as the eyepiece quickly fogged up from my eye. This is my personal best RGB Jupiter. Hope you like it

Regards,
Steve

Excellent shot, especially for Connecticut--at least I assume y'all aren't known for good seein'...

I guess that only the higher end brands of scopes are good enough for amateur photography and unless you are willing to pay huge amounts of money, your attempts are futile. wink

That is most ASSUREDLY not the case...and I don't believe that was bein' suggested. If somebody _was_ suggestin' that, they was DEAD WRONG.
