Mars August 4, 2005

Hi all,

I think the seeing was decent, but I am convinced the collimation on the C925 was a bit off. Anyway, you can see decent detail, but the flaring is a bit distracting. I think I corrected it for the following days, to be posted later. This was shot with the Lumenera at F/30, 30fps and 979/3000 images, enlarged 1.5x.

Mewlon almost ready!!

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

Just a short update....my Mewlon 250 is almost ready for first light!! The vendor only sent 2 of 3 counterbalance weights and the system does not balance. I am getting the 3rd weight on Wednesday, so with any luck, I'll have the unit set up Thursday and will try to observe Thursday evening. However, the weatherfolks predict rain all week, so the first light may be delayed. I'm getting pictures and will post them, even if it's of just the scope... grin

Getting closer, waiting for the clouds to part.

Hi all,

Here is a picture of my new scope. The only problem....it's inside the house. Storm clouds all over the place. Well, it should get better. Can't wait for first light!!

First light....

Posted By Paul Maxson

Here is my long awaited first light image with my new Mewlon 250. I think seeing was only average and I was dodging clouds during the session. I only did a boilerplate processing, nothing fancy. I just wanted to get an idea what I have. This was shot with the Toucam, Baader NIRB filter and 2.5x powermate. I then enlarged it 1.5x. I haven't had time to even touch the images shot with the Lumenera yet. From all indications, I think I will be one happy guy!! This was 260/1200 frames. I hope to do better when I get time to really sit down and use our processing tricks. I also plan to post a picture of the scope and me (beauty and the beast if you will) later today. grin

Beauty and the beast

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

Thanks for the nice comments! I am hoping when I reprocess the image it will take on a more natural appearance. I overprocessed a bit on purpose just to see how far I could take it. Anyway, here is the beauty and me. Sorry for the bmp the first time around....I got caught up in the moment. :-D

I finally got some pictures of my two scopes. Actually I have a C925 as well, but it may be up for sale very soon.

Hi all,

Here is a Mars from August 14. Seeing was not very good as Mars was diving in and out of clouds....

Help with Long Exposure.

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

I am primarily a planetary imager, but I have some desire to do some long exposure imaging. Primarily I want to try for planetary satelites (Deimos, Phobos, etc). I have a Mewlon 250 and one of my cameras is an Atik 1HS. The other night I shot Mars at prime focus with 15 ten second frames and only got a brigher Mars. Forgetting for the moment about flats and darks, what sort of suggestions can I get on how to be more successful. Am I better off doing fewer frames, but longer (say 10 one minute exposures) or many more shorter exposures (say 100 ten second exposures). What about settings, gain, brightness, etc. As soon as I can get that going I'll get into the other issues with flats and darks, etc.

Any suggestions are most helpful!!

Thanks again!

Hi all,

Seeing was fair, but not horrid...still awefully warm and lots of heat in the tube. Shot with the Toucam.
