For a first it is not bad at all. In fact the major problem is over exposure, the center of the galaxy is blown out. This is easily removed by taking short images to use for those areas. You might want to try taking a bit shorter subs next time, might help. But no worries, it will all come together in the end.

Any loss to us on the hardware scene is a bummer. I don't like to think that only Kodak will be selling us our chips in the future. I have a Kodak chip myself, but the Sony chips have good attributes that make them desirable.

CS5 is very good and has all that is needed. CS6 goes into video and web more. CS-2 works but the brushes and other things are just not as good as CS5. CS5 is available but you must look for it. Still cost is high at least $500 with one new one for sale on Ebay for $600.
Otherwise just buy the newest for $10 or so a month from Photoshop.

Not sure if you have the carbon fiber 10rc or not, but if so then it really needs the dovetail plates for support.
Rings will work on the carbon fiber but not sure it will decrease the weight. The plates that come with the 8-10RC are pretty lightweight.
The problem with weight is only half the issue. The focal length will make it harder too. Lightweight mounts have a hard time when near their limits.
Honestly I don't think you can get much weight off the scope.
