Bible-Based Geocentricity

Like the Creationists, some folks just won't quit, even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary:

I'm curious why and how people can cling to archaic beliefs in the face of clear evidence that it isn't true. I'm not here to argue science vs religion (science always wins), but am trying to understand the mindset that leads one to believe pure nonsense, proven beyond a doubt to be untrue (e.g., geocentrism, creationism).

My answer? I don't know. I even wrote a whole blog on the subject recently. My supposition is that they are involved in a religion that demands the unerring literal truth of what is in their holy book. Even a child will see that it's necessary to invoke an earth-centered universe if that's to be possible.

This could be any number of things. A good place to look for answers is the MAPUG archive website.

A good place to ask for answers is the Meade-Uncensored Yahoogroup.

Is a Mewlon 250 the right direction ??

Posted By Rod Mollise

Brad Geisler said:

I'm thinking about a Mewlon 250 to replace my 7" Mak and a CPC1100. My stable has an 18" Dob and an 80mm FD as well. I'm thinking the 250 would be better planetary than the 7" Mak but slightly less light grasp than the 11". I don't want exclusively a planetary scope and it sounds like the 250 is more than capable on DSO. I have also heard rumor about diffraction spikes in the Mewlon series with bright objects such as planets. What is the real deal you Mewlon efficianatos ???? Would I be better off with a TOA 130 for what I'm after or would I loose to much light grasp ??

Thanks in advance,
Brad in Phoenix

As much as I love SCTs, I've often thought about moving to a Mewlon. Now, if only I weren't so CHEAP. lol

Anyone else plan on seeing this movie. It opens next week. The trailers look good and I think the concept is interesting. Peter Jackson has made very good films in the past. I hope this one is good too.

I dunno...didn't we cover this ground with _Alien Nation_ already? It looks like a nasty little movie to me.

Thrift store B&L 4000

David Bacheller said:

Hello to all. I am rank beginner and have just a few SC scopes, but I was out scrounging yesterday and found a thrift store Bausch and Lomb 4000 in the case for $20. I figured it was worth the Jackson just for the case, and to see how a SCT really works. This poor little scope has been beating about the head and shoulders and I'm up to my elbows in newbie discoveries and fixes, but if anyone is interested I can share some of my adventures. Pretty fun so far. I'm not sure if this is the appropriate forum, so let me know.

This one was never a barn-burner of a telescope...but for 20 bucks? Right on!

The Sputnik Moment

Maurice Clark said:

Just come across a very interesting documentary on YouTube called "The Sputnik Moment".

A very interesting look at the reaction of the USA to the launch of Sputnik. Could be interesting for my students next semester. Some very telling comments during the film. One of the most telling I think was by Charles Van Doren, American Intellectual: "What went wrong? How did a nation of backward peasants forge so dramatically ahead of us in the race to space?" Sounds very familiar, considering some of the comments that appear on other fora here.

Cheers,

Maurice

The Sputnik reaction?

"When in trouble
when in doubt
run in circles
scream and shout."

It was tied up in Cold War paranoia. First there was a bomber gap. Then there was a missile gap. In truth, at that time, and far into the sixties, we could easily have cleaned Moscow's clock and they would have been able to do very little about it. The fear of TREMENDOUS RUSSIAN STRIDES was mostly mongered by the very folk Eisenhower warned us against. It's easy to see how that was accomplished...if the Russkies put a satellite in orbit, they must have THOUSANDS of H-bomb loaded ICBMs ready for launch. Ike was well aware this was not the case, not even close, but could not say so and compromise his sources.

Was the sudden hysteria good for NASA or bad? Good in the short term. In the long term? Not So Much. After Apollo the urgency was gone and the manned space program went right in the toilet where it has remained for 40 years. ;-(

TSC-225 Questions

Posted By Rod Mollise

larry thaxton said:

I have a chance to pick up a TSC-225 from a friend in Japan. It does not include the dew shield (after market will have to do for now) or the fan, both of which were apparently optional at the time the scopes were in production. Anyone have a recommendation for either?

Thanks! Love Takahashi scopes!!

If I recall, the fan was advertised as standard equipment here. In Japan, I suppose it could have been different.

If you haven't seen it yet ES is beating TV to the punch. At only $499 could this be a gamechanger?

Well...perhaps. Remember, the eypiece's NORMAL price following the introductory price is going to be 600 bucks. Also, if it's like its little sister, it will not be quite as good optically as an Ethos. It may convince Uncle Al to keep his prices out of heartattack range, at least. LOL

vignetting on a C11

Posted By Rod Mollise

Dan Lamoreaux said:

So I picked up a nice NS11. Thanks again for everyone's help in my earlier post to help make a decision. Upon examination of it I noticed a pretty small opening with the stock visual back. I checked and Peterson doesn't show an eye opener for the this scope. Is vignetting an issue with 2" long f.l. eyepieces? If so, at what f.l. does the vignetting start?

Thanks in advance,
DanL

I've got an Eye Opener for my 11(Petersen used to make them for the Celestrons)...it is A VERY nice piece of work, but, frankly, I have never noticed a difference with/without with oculars up to and including the 35 Pan. The only benefit to these things for visual use (including the AP one) IMHO is that they allow you to insert a 2-inch refractor style diagonal into the scope without the use of a 2-inch adapter. If that doesn't sound fun enough to you, save your money. :-)
