Would one of these work for you?
Three-ply plywood with aluminum frame, four locking latches and carry handle. Fully padded on all sides and loaded with pick-n-pluck foam. I use one for my Celestron advanced series CG-5 head.

Almost definitely a low voltage problem. Nexstars, and all goto scopes, are battery hogs. If voltage drops much below 12 volts, this is just the type of thing that starts to happen. And, if that's not bad enough, cold weather only makes the problem worse. Sometimes the hand paddles start to have erratic behavior when they get cold even when there is good voltage.
