Unfortunately most commercially made newtonian scopes place the image pretty far out in the focuser. The only really good way to access prime focus is to move the mirror and cell in the needed direction so the camera will reach focus. This is not hard to do if you are careful. Simply remove the mirror cell with mirror and redrill holes to mount the mirror and cell in. Usually about 1.5 inches forward in the tube will be enough. You might also consider replacing the focuser with a 2" variety if it doesn't have one already.

1. Full scale drawing with ray traces drawn out. Then make measurements.
2. Wrap the tube with newspaper taped together to get a full circumference cover. Mark the paper at one point, i.e., the top. Remove the paper and measure the circumference and measure/mark the 1/4 distance points. Return to the tube and transfer measured points to the tube. Drill holes.

The problem is that any increase over your current aperture will be noticeable, but will it meet your expectations. I have had several 4, 5 and 6 inch refractors and to be honest the increase up the scale was simply underwhelming. The same was true when moving up in newts from 6 to 8 to 12. When I got to 12 I was very happy but transport was problematic.
I tend to use my refractors for close doubles and planets. The 12 inch is used for the faint fuzzies.
Personally I would say keep the 110 until you are able to go really big with quality. That will probably take you way over your budget

Many years ago I was given a "projector lens" and put it in a piece of PVC pipe and made a reducer and slide focuser for the other end. It was about 90mm or so, probably an f/4.5 to f/5. With a wide field 35mm ep i got some of the best views I have ever had of the Andromeda galaxy and M33 up at Mt. Pinos. Probably in the mid 70's if I remember correctly. Do the same and you might have a jewel!

Image brightness would be extremely dim and most likely not narrow enough bandpass to allow prominence views. That requires bandpass of .75 A or less. The typical Ha filter is a hundred A more or less.

They just recoated my 12" f/5 and it is perfect. Very good job. They checked the figure and strongly suggested a refigure but I declined. This is a 12" knock around scope that I am very satisfied with the images it throws up as is. The new coating will do nothing but help I amn sure.
