Cat's Eye

I had some hazy conditions Friday night but the seeing was great so I turned my attention to the small and bright. Here's the Cat's Eye at 3600mm focal length. At 20 arcseconds in diameter this puppy makes M57 look huge. The sun was not to far below the eastern horizon and everything was dripping with dew but I did manage to get some color data.

Intes MN65 @ F22 (4x powermate)
AP1200GTO
Atik 16 HR w/ manual filter wheel
LRGB minutes (10:3:3:5)

Crescent

Here is my version of the Crescent that was inspired by Philip Good's APOD of the same object. I used 120 minutes of H alpha and 140 minutes of OIII. I then constructed a RGB image using the HA data for the red channel and the OIII for the blue channel. For the green channel I added HA data and the OIII data and then divided the sum by 2. I then played with the color balance until I liked the appearance. It is probably way out of balance and heavy in the blue....but this is just one interpretation.

I used my TV60is with a TV 0.8x reducer. ATIK16HR camera with manual filter wheel. Schuler Astrodon 10nm HA and Schuler Astrodon 15nm OIII. Guided with PHD guiding and ATIK16IC thru my MN65. AP1200 GTO mount.

Image taken from central Austin, TX. My house is about 50 feet from a 6 lane highway well lit with sodium vapor lighting. Narrowband imaging is truly phenomenal!

Nebulosity around Antares

Clear moonless skies at last. Here's about 1.5 hrs (LRGB 45:12:12:15)taken thru a TV60is with a TV 0.8x reducer. ATIK16HR camera, Astrodon color filters and IDAS filter for luminance. Photographed from about 60 miles west of Austin (approx mag 6 NELM at zenith). I used the IDAS filter because I do have light pollution on my horizons.

Acquired and combined in AstroArt 4.0. Stretched and color "balanced" in Nebulosity.

Fun stuff!

Veil with the venerable Orion ST120

Captured and guided with AstroArt 4.0 Twelve 5 min subs for a total of 60 min HA. Two 5 min subs + seven 3 min subs for a total of 41 min of OIII. Synthetic green channel made from average of HA & OIII. Processed in Nebulosity and AstroArt. AP1200 mount and Atik16HR with Atik manual filter wheel. Mag 4.5-5.0 city skies.

Unconventional Veil

On large objects I am somewhat limited with the sensor size of the Atik 16HR...not to mention the corrected field size of the Orion ST120 at F4 (TV 0.8 reducer). Anyway, here's a slightly different view of a much photographed object.

5 hours of exposure (all 10 min subs)across two nights. Captured and guided with AstroArt 4.0. 4.5nm CS HA filter. No darks, no flats, no bias frames...they actually degraded the signal of the ultraclean Sony ICX-285 AL chip . Minimal processing - Subs averaged, slight gradient removal, and stretched in AstroArt - once again sigma combine seemed to degrade the signal of the squeaky clean Sony chip. Ap1200.

Andromeda core

Socked in by clouds led me to processing some data from early october 2007. Here's just under 40 minutes of exposure thru the Meade SN10. IDAS LP filter. Combination of 60 and 90 second subs unguided on an AP1200. Atik 16HR. Captured and averaged in AstroArt 4.0. No calibration frames. Processed in Nebulosity.

Mag 4.5 skies. I am next to a six lane sodium vapor superslab. After 5 years of visual work with a big dob under dark skies, I am forever amazed with CCD. A quick study with Megastar/Realsky indicates that a mag 18.6 globular is easily captured. Although I miss the glow of the milky way and the pinprick star fields that only visual observing provides, CCD work is much better suited to the busy life with my 5 and 6 year old children.
