Be careful while viewing ....

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

Just saw a story on CNN about some of the weapons the Iraqi militants are using. Not good. I happen to just catch a glimps of the TV and said to myself, "Wow, look at that neat 4" reflector mounted on a heavy duty photo tripod." Upon a closer look, it ended up being a weapon. It really looked like a small reflector.

I can see law enforcement mistaking someones telescope in the middle of the night for a rocket launcher. I know the dob stories with police not knowing what's inside that big sonotube, but this is a little different. This is an object that actually resembles a telescope.

Just be a little more cautious when you view.

Clear and safe skies,

Hardin 6" Dob Question

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

I just assembled a Hardin 6" dob and I am having a hard time installing the upper spring screws into the alt. bearing. These are the knobed 3" long screws. Both of them go in about 1/4 of the way and they just stop hard. How can I get these in all of the way? Any tricks?

Thanks,

Tim

Telescopes for School

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

I think a couple pairs of Fujinon 16x70's, a complete set of Naglers and a couple C14's. Just kidding!!!!

I think the 6 to 8 inch dob is the best choice. The Orion XT6 or clone has received excellent planetary viewing reviews. And the XT8 or clone can give a little more umph for the DSO's.

Call Orion and ask if they can honor a volume or school discount. They'll probably do something. Free advertising for them when the students want to get a scope for home.

Good luck and glad to hear about your plans.

Home Obsevatory

Don't forget the foundation, pier, and electrical work. Our club is in the middle of gathering pricing for the restoration of a 1920's 10ft. diam. dome observatory. We are relocating it to a new location. Concrete foundation below the frost line, concrete pier, pad flatwork will cost around ~$2,500. Electrical work trenching and materials will cost another ~$1,000. These costs are to have someone else do the work. We have to do the project this way because it's for a school system.

Good luck with your project.

I have the adapter and it works great. Be careful not to cross-thread the adapter to the camera.

Observatory Security

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

We had an open viewing session in the school parking lot tonight. We had an 8" and 10" Dob. About 15 students and 3 parents showed up. They did not know about the observatory project until we told them the details. They were really excited.

We viewed Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, M44, M42, M36, Castor(double), Mizar/Alcor, & Betelguese.

Hopefully they will sell the observatory idea in school tomorrow.

Reflector or Refractor?

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

Orion has an XT6 in the "Clearance" section for $279.00. Regular price is $329. The scope is sold with its full 1 year warranty. These may have a cosmetic blem or had just been a return from a prior sale.

These scopes are supposed to offer the best of both worlds (lunar and planetary / DSO's).

I bought a 9 x 50 RACI finder from the clearance section and couldn't find any thing wrong operationally or visually.

Good luck with your choice.
