PST Finally On The Way !!!

Posted By Garry Johnson

I have my PST mounted on Orion's AZ3 mount. The whole setup is super light weight and the AZ3 can handle the PST with no problem. I absolutely love having slow motion controls and that's the main reason why I went with the AZ3.

Mounting Options

Posted By Garry Johnson

The scopestuff package works great. My friend uses it for mounting an 80mm on top of his 10" Meade LXD55.

Which Barlow for PST?

Posted By Garry Johnson

I have tried the Cemax 2x, Antares 3 element 2x, Celestron Ultima 2x and the Orion Shorty Plus 2x barlows all with no problems reaching focus. I think the key here is that they are all shorty style barlows. Full size barlows, like the Meade 140 2x or the Televue 2x may work but I don't have either one of those to test.

Binoviewing downsides

Posted By Garry Johnson

The only downside I have come across so far with binoviewing is an obvious light loss when observing dso's from the city. For example, the orion nebula is invisible in the binoviewer from my back yard in Los Angeles, CA (in my 8" and 12" dobs) but it's easily visible in mono mode through both scopes. From dark skies however, the binoviewer turns the orion nebula (and many other dso's) into 3D like objects of beauty. This light loss situation certainly doesn't make me want to go back to mono viewing though, I just save my dso observing for dark skies and focus on the sun, moon, planets and stars from LA.

PST vs Thousand Oaks Optical dilemna

Posted By Garry Johnson

If all you want to observe are prominences then the thousand oaks filter will work for you because that's absolutely all it will show you. On the other hand, the PST will show you prominences plus a rather good amount of surface detail (filaments, etc.). It wouldn't be a hard decision to make for me, the PST shows more and cost less, the only draw back for me is that the PST is not binoviewer friendly...yet. For less money than the thousand oaks filter you could buy the PST, a white light filter for your SCT and a mounting rail to mount the PST on top of the SCT.

I have a PST mounted on an Orion AZ3 mount and it absolutely blows me away every time I take it outside.

What do I need to bring Saturn to me?

Here is a map of the sky looking east right now. Castor and Pollux (in Gemini) will point you right to Saturn.
