And a closeup of the "T-shaped" prominence

Andy,
What power is this shot taken at? Full disc has a pleasant effect.

Transit of Venus - eastern US viewing?

Posted By Alan Koff

I like the beachfront high-rise idea the most. Here in Myrtle Beach the oceanfront high-rises rule the downtown area, now all I have to do is look for the tallest one with a balcony, should be an easy naked-eye project. Also because in live here I can book it at the last minute if the seeing conditions are good.
Now I wonder what the formula is for gain in elevation versus gain in observable sunrise?

Black Forest Star Party

Posted By Alan Koff

I'm heading up from Myrtle Beach, land of the Carolina Nebula, to experience the dark skies and the 'cool' evenings of Potter County. Looking forward to meeting and collaborating with everyone, which I feel is always the best part of these events.
This will be the first leg of my one week Star Party tour, I'm headed to Jersey for the South Jersey Star Party the following weekend. Anyone headed to that one?

Poor Man's Solar Hat!

Posted By Alan Koff

Nice hat !!! I have one just like it, good idea !! It has to be cheaper than Coronado's.
My PST arrives today, unless the UPS man figures he wants one too. But of course, the skies are clouding-up as I type this, and the extended forecast is even worse.
Clear shies,
Al

Coronado PST - Who's Tried One?

Posted By Alan Koff

Paul,
I have only had mine for two days, and unfortunately the skies have been quite cloudy. I have had about thirty mnutes of viewing with it so I'm still 'learning' the basics. The supplied 12.5mm Kellner is a 'peep' sight type EP and I have already sold it here on Amart. I did get the 18mm Cemax EP and it seems to provide a nice full disc view with room to spare, this should be good for afocal photography.
My early impressions are that the scope is everything Coronado said it would be. I am drooling at the prospects of clear sky viewing, solar flares and proms require as clear a sky as night viewing without having to travel to remote locales.
Clear skies,
Al

Cemax Eyepiece Set

Posted By Alan Koff

I have only had my PST for a couple of weeks and purchased a Cemax 18mm as part of the 'special'.
I love this EP for viewing, it fits the OTA aperture nicely. My Nagler 9T6 has me racking the focuser to achieve focus and seems sensitive at that. I am waiting for some clear skies to try a few plossls I have purchased as part of a trial.
Supposedly the fewer the elements the lesser reflection.

Black Forest Star Party....Who's In?

Posted By Alan Koff

Camp Lowbrow, I should fit right in. Weather has to improve, hopefully sooner than later.
Look for me in the Honda 'Breadbox'. It will be my first solo star party.
Keep those cards and letters comin' in. 8)

Congrats Dave,
Did you see the SIZE of today's PROM? 10X larger than anything I've seen since last October.
Been watching it all morning at 40X. Gotta go!

PST central obstruction?

Posted By Alan Koff

Russell,
I am waiting for a Cemax 12mm, but I do have the Cemax 18mm which I like quite a bit. However, I have been using an Orion Sirius 10mm plossl that has been blowing me away, hands down!
As far as a central obstruction, I can't see it, but if you have a 40mm EP, that would show it I would think.
