max FL for Toucam chip

The focal length of my scope is 2300mm, with a 5X powermate it would be 11,500mm. Would Jupiter or Saturn fit on the Toucam chip at this FL? If so, would keeping it on the chip for the AVI capture be too tedious using an alt/az drive like the Servocat. I think some of you are imaging at some pretty high FL's on Dobs so I'd like to hear what you think before I plunk down the bucks for a 5X powermate as it would be only used for webcam imaging, thanks in advance.

After the double transit

I just missed the double transit on Jupiter but caught the tail end of one moonshadow. The seeing was only fair and I was a about 7000mm FL which looks to have been a bit much.

Jupiter double transit 03-29-04

The Seeing was horrible for the triple transit so I got one tonight of the double and GRS in fair seeing P5 to P6.
C8@F20 toucam pro, 1215 frames out of 1500. Suggestions, comments, snide remarks are welcome as I am trying to get better at this imaging thing, thanks, Vince

Jupiter double transit last night

Well the 20 knot winds that were howling on the night of the triple transit have settled down and gave way to some decent seeing last night so i was able to get some images of the double transit. I also have a sketch that makes for an interesting comparison but no scanner to post it. C8 @ F20, Toucam Pro, Seeing P5 to P6

Here are some quickly processed AVI's that i took last night under decent seeing conditions. The second Jupiter was at F30 which did not hold up in P6 seeing. The lunar images are at F10 with the exception of Valles Alpes @ F20. thanks for looking.

Processing question

When I adjust the wavelets in Registax on webcam images to the desired level of sharpness I sometimes get a series of "rings" just inside of the limb as in the attached image (about 1100 frames stacked.) Is there a secret to processing these out? What causes them? Could it be that registax picks some frames where the seeing was terrible with a bloated limb and thus stacking it on good frames? My settings are: brightness 100%, gain 30%, gamma 0%, 10fps @ 1/25th sec. So far I have been doing all processing in Registax. Maybe its time to take the plunge and get Photoshop. thanks for any advice.

Mirror Cell/Tube/spider choice

Does anyone have any suggestions for a commercially availible mirror cell to be used with a 1.6" thick, 12.5" F5 or maybe F6 primary mounted in a tube? So far the only ones I have seen are from University optics and DAR astro engineering.

Also, anyone have any experience with a honeycomb core fiberglass tube? Better rigidity, better cooling? They are pretty pricey, would it be worth it over normal fiberglass or coated sonotube?

Protostar has a curved spider vane that looks appealing to me, is there anyone with experience with these spiders?

I am not building this scope from scratch but rather buying the parts to put together a dedicated planetary scope to my specs. any help is appreciated, thanks, Vince

Blue Festoon Alley

Had P4 seeing last night but was able to get one decent AVI of festoon alley after dropping my C8 fork and OTA from waist height on the floor of my balcony giving myself a heart attack. The only casualty was collimation which you can see here from the abnormally blue limb on the right. That is a collimation error as atmoshperic dispersion is not normally that pronounced in my scope. I will try to tweak it better tonight. C8@F20, Toucam Pro, 467 frames processed in Registax 2. The images are not so great but I have a comparison posted on the web of the changing festoon activity, 2 shots a week apart, pretty interesting.

comparison of Jupiters festoons

Here is a comparison of the blue festoons on Jupiter. The first image is from 4-7-04, Seeing P4, the second image is from 3-31-04, Seeing P6. Although the CM is not exactly the same in the two images there appears to have been quite a change in activity in just one week, thanks for looking.
