Using a cheshire eyepiece on a refractor

Posted By Bill Barrett

I recently picked up a cheshire eyepiece to collimate my refractors.
I wonder if I'm doing something wrong because the reflected light circles move if the light source is held at different angles or distances from the eyepiece. If I hold it one way I get one overlapping pattern. If I hold it another I get two distinctly separate reflected discs.
I'm using a small maglite and wonder if that is too powerful, and might be part of the problem.

Any info on how to best use the cheshire eyepiece would be greatly appreciated. thank you, Bill

Refractor collimation tolerances, at what point?

Posted By Bill Barrett

It is my understanding the faster the scope, the more important collimation is...but how close is close enough?
I'm particularly concerned about my old 6" F8 Jaegers because I'm seriously considering a chromacor.
With the use of a cheshire eyepiece I can get one slightly oval reflection, but not perfectly round. I'm wondering when is close, close enough?

Where does all that dust come from?

Posted By Bill Barrett

I recently rebaffled and flocked the inside of my refractor. Now it seems like the back of the lens is a dust magnet. Is there anything I can do about that? thank you, Bill

How to detect over or under correction?

Posted By Bill Barrett

I have seen several posts by experienced observers noting their scopes showed a bit of over or under correction. Can one actually detect over or under correction without actually doing a star test or using ronchi screen?

Clear skies but very unstable viewing

Posted By Bill Barrett

We have had a bit of a high pressure system and a few cold, clear pre- sunrise mornings in Seattle recently. Jupiter has been very well placed high in the south and Saturn still well above the horizonin the west, so I thought I would try to get in a few peeks between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m. But much to my surprise the images have been very watery and unstable. Stars flared and showed coma. Has anyone else been experiencing this?

Saturn...is it my imagination?

Posted By Bill Barrett

Last year delivered fantastic views of Saturn! I remember on several occasions being able to see the Cassini division as if it were inked in black, and the rings were clear all the way around the disk.

If I am not mistaken our perspective this year has been markedly different. I have found it much more difficult to resolve Cassini, and it appears much finer. The rings disappear behind the planet, rather than the planet being suspended in the center of the rings.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Does anyone re-coat lenses?

Posted By Bill Barrett

I have been trying to find someone to re-coat a refractor lens. I've spoken to
Majestic & Clausing. Neither will do a lens which has been previously coated. I contacted Sirius and they don't do it anymore. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Bill

If I could only have one (or two) 2" eyepieces?

Posted By Bill Barrett

I need a recommendation for a 2" eyepiece to use with my 6" F8 refractor. I would rather spend the money on one really great eyepiece than have several very good eyepieces.
The perfect eyepiece would be in focus out to the edges, and have a wide enough field to frame the Plaiedes.
thank you, Bill
P.S. if you think there would be an ideal combo of 2 eyepieces, please let me know.
