1st attempt at a comet

Posted By Jason Lane

Exposure times: Do an internet search for other comet shots and exposure times. This should be pretty easy info to track down. Brighter comets can get about 5-10 minutes, depending on f-ratio and film speed. Bracket widely. I'd guess you want to start at 5 minute shots and go up from there.

Tracking mode: EQ. Do shots tracking both comet and guide star.

I don't recommend using a common film like Superia 400. Remember, you only get one chance to capture the event so you better pull out all the stops. Use a fine grain film like Kodak Ektachrome E100 or E200, or (IMO better) the Fuji Provia 100/400 or the faster Sensias. If it was me I'd try them all. Do as much as you can and most of all, have fun smile

With your Maxxim 5, I think the shutter is held open on battery power: Be sure to bring a couple sets of spare batteries. oh and a remote shutter release cable.

Jason

Rustoleum Chalk Board Black paint

Posted By Jason Lane

That will work fine as a flat paint, although it's not the purest black (more of a very dark gray). What we use for non-critical optical black paint at work is Krylon Ultra Flat Black. Flocking that on gives a very satisfying flat black.

Lumicon refractor easy guider

Posted By Jason Lane

Check out Taures-Tech's short OAG's. I found their off-axis guiders are superior to Lumicon's in many ways, although more expensive (I use the Tracker III. No association other than a satisfied customer).
