I checked out the group in a friends 12.5" about a week a go. In fact, I mentioned the CCD photo here.

I was able to make out the three brightest galaxies, with some effort. But I identified what I saw at the eyepiece prior to looking at the atlas (he had found the galaxies).

Last night's Ganymede Transit

I caught it. Didn't know what is was at first. Checked Guide and quickly found out. It was a great sight from here. It appeared dark and round but overall not as stark as a shadow transit, probably because it's smaller. As it neared and exited the limb, it became a luminescent round orb.

It was fun to watch and I had some great views of Jupiter to boot.

31mm Nagler - Is it really worth it?

I owned and really loved the 31T5. It performed exceptionally, particularly for such a long focal length.

But with an f4.5 scope your exit pupil is 6.9mm, so you're effectively stopping down your aperture. My not matter to most, but food for thought.

Am I ever with you there. I stopped buying Meade products long ago. Seemed like everything I bought from them simply did not work as advertised. This was true of equipment owned by friends as well. In addition, producst I bought would break constantly.
