New 30D User; RFI do's, don'ts, pros, cons

My wife and I finally decided to take the plunge this week. We got a Canon 30D with the 28-135mm kit lens that came with it; the battery grip; a 4G memory card; and a Canon 100-400mm zoom lens.

Obviously, we're digesting the 1000+ pages of manuals right now. But what I'd really appreciate would be some personal accounts by folks who use the same or similar set-up... what have you figured out that makes it easier to use, or some simple tricks that you use a lot that we could start implementing right away, and especially any pit-falls or limitations that you have found with this camera. We have been using a 2.1 megapixel Olympus C2400 (ca. 2000) for so long, can't wait to get this baby out in the field to see what it can do. We're doing our first SE Arizona birding trip in a week - should be sweeeeeeet smile

Thanks - always a helpful group!

First trip to SE Arizona - simply awesome. Here's a couple attempts at this US rarity with our new Canon 30D... still trying to learn this thing on the fly smile

Taken at Ash Canyon, Arizona on 7-22-07. Canon 30D, 400mm, 1/60, flash, 8% sharpen, -3 brightness, cropped.

This little guy just sat right on the road until I was almost standing on him!

This shot was taken by my wife (Rachel Cass) on 7-23-07 at San Pedro House outside Sierra Vista, AZ. Canon 30D, 400mm, f5.6, 1/250, flash, -3 brightness, 10% sharpen on purple throat feathers only, mild clone stamp to lessen eye reflection from flash.

Caught this guy in pretty, late afternoon light yesterday 9/8/07. Fall migration is just getting into full gear for passerines in Georgia.

how about a woodpecker?

we saw a pair of gorgeous flickers off our back deck in Atlanta a lot this summer - not lately.

Also, a nesting pair of redheads chose a dead tree maybe 100 yds. straight off the back deck that made for great viewing! The baby finally emerged late Sept. - head not red yet. Strangest thing - both redheads would feed from our "finch-style" tube feeder regularly all summer. Anyone else seen this? they sure were awkward, but what a sight only a few feet from your face!

I'm also learning about resolution, etc. Here's a larger and, hence, a bit better version.

As others have said... this is the universally (I hope) despised European Starling. 100 Were introduced into Central Park a loooong time ago and now they rule the continent, forcing other cavity nesters out of their nests so they can take over!

Here's a slightly different pose... you can tell how much I am messing with contrast and saturation - I'm trying to play with this very limited program to see what I can do.
