I have read Michael's reply. He seems to have had the chance to use an older 0.965 with his APQ's and to compare with the Abbe's.

Well I have yet to use a 1.25" but am delighted with my 0.965" Abbe's.

A US friend has told me is unable to tell the difference with the 10 mm 0.965 and 1.25 inch Abbe's.

Perhaps a fair test needs to be arranged.

As to the Zeiss value question, the rarity and uniqueness of the APQ's (fewer than 500 were made) means thay will long be sought after. I would suggest they will appreciate.

I know the fact Zeiss were discontinuing production in 1994/5 was a chief reason why I purchased from Zeiss an APQ 100.

It was also my first true scope and I like Michael have developed Zeiss loyalty.

Perhaps if the APQ's were re-released and more widely in circulation they would decrease in value.

I bet also if AP stopped production tomorrow the price for these scopes would appreciate with time.

The TOA seems to be quite compact with dew shield retracted.

How do the focusers compare. Plus is the snap into focus spherical correction differences??

Also how does the colour compare? Is it at all obtrusive with the FS 128??

One way is to research old Zeiss astro catalogs where Zeiss telescopes were advertised.

www.achromat.de is a web site that has some details on older Zeiss telescopes.

I have a 1931 Astro catalog so if you want to post the photo I can try and identify the telescope for you.

Zeiss telescope development was gradual rather than sudden.

In earlier telescopes features visible in more modern refractors are common. e.g. turrets and prisms have the same basic design.

Well done. The increase of detail with aperture is very evident.

I have three reasonable slides of Jupiter I use in talks which show a similar trend.

The smallest was with a 100 mm apo, the middle aperture was a 200 mm SCT, the larger a 38 cm Cassegrain.

Aperture does seem to help with photography. With visual use i find while increase aperture helps the differences are affected a lot by telescope design, obstruction and seeing.

I enjoyed seeing this comparison.

I use a Schott Marsglas on the moon(often when full) . Also neutral density filters. Mondglas Dunkel(Dark) and Hell(light)

I have just got in from viewing Mars and also Plato from 37 degrees South latitude.

4 brighter craterlets the small one near the rim was not easily discernible. Suspected other little ones too!!

Seing O.K. perhaps 7/10 for a short time.

Mars was great. Instrument my 130 mm apo refractor.

Were the Zeiss bino's from Carl Zeiss Jena or the oberkochen Zeiss west models??

I own the West 7X50 b's from 1970's approx. And my twin has Jena Jenoptem 7X50's from 1980's.

The Zeiss West have better eye relief and consequently wide filed views , the Jena binoc's resolve a little better and have more modern coatings and a better rendition of contrast.

I prefer the older West because of the feel and mechanical precision.

I've never heard of a reaction between aluminium and glass before.

Perhaps Newport need to pay for a new mirror or get this one resurfaced by a reputable optician to an acceptable stsndard.

It is a thick mirror by appearance.

B is short for a German word that means eye cup one can wear with glasses.
GA means rubber armoured.
T refers to the famous Zeiss T* coatings. The coatings the APQ's have!!

I've not used either binocular and have only ever seen favourable comments about the 15 X 60's.
