Sunflower galaxy

Posted By Jean-Denis Douvier

Taken Sunday 03/02 from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Beautiful night, clear, no wind, it was a blast from 7pm to 3:30am.
14 x 5min = 1h10min with C9.25 reducer f/6.3 1480mm, Canon 20Da ISO 1600, G11, autoguided with PHDGuiding webcam and FS60C. The Celestron has an external spike generator.
Just one regret about the picture, the colors are very faded, 1h10 is not enough. Maybe next time...

Thanks for looking

M101

Posted By Jean-Denis Douvier

Hi,
After 2 months of clouds and rain (good thing), the sky cleared up last week on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is M101 and neighbors taken with the Takahashi Epsilon 160 f/3.3, Losmandy G11, Canon 20Da ISO 1600. Auto guided with PHDGuiding (with a Tak FS60 and ToUcam webcam).
18 exposures of 3 minutes each.

Thanks for looking !

Markarian's chain

Posted By Jean-Denis Douvier

Well, one single picture is definitely not enough for a single night, so I also shot Markarian's chain with the same configuration as M101.
This time though, 19 exposures of 3 minutes each.
Post processing is done with ImagePlus and Photoshop with darks, bias and flats.

Lots of galaxies there but tough to get them correctly and process. They are all quite small.

Thanks for looking !

Moon and Mercury

This one is from Charlotte, 05/06 at 9:00pm. Taken on a tripod with the Canon 200mm L lens at f/2.8, and the Canon 40D at ISO 100.

Interesting surprise : Canon changed the format of its raw files, so the Photoshop plugin that worked with 20D raw files doesn't work anymore. Technology... Change for the sake of change I presume.

M20 - Trifid

I was at New Mexico Skies for 7 nights at the beginning of the month. That place is a blast ! The paradise for us, amateur astronomers ! Perfect weather for 6 nights in a row, clear, transparent, dark - very dark.

Celestron 9.25, f/6.3, 1480mm focal length. Losmandy G-11 guided with Tak FS60, webcam and PHDGuiding. Canon 20Da at ISO 1600.
Taken 05/29, 15 x 5min.

Thanks for looking !

Rho Ophiuchus

Still New Mexico Skies, this time on 06/02. There was a little more wind so I used the Canon macro 100mm f/2.8 lens at f/3.5. No guiding necessary.
That area is beautiful, but dark skies are needed to get the colors. Here there's 50 x 2min exposure with the 20Da, and it is asking for more to get even deeper colors. Next time (?)...

Thanks for looking !

Elephant Trunk nebula

Posted By Jean-Denis Douvier

Hi,

I took this last week, Wednesday September 3rd from the Blue Ridge Parkway, NC. Celestron 9.25 with focal reducer, f/6.3, 1480mm focal length. Losmandy G-11 with PHDGuiding for autoguider (Tak FS60, Phillips webcam). I'm using a Canon 20Da at ISO 1600.
This exposure is 2 hours long total, 24 x 5min subframes.
Frames are calibrated (with darks, bias and flats) aligned and combined with ImagePlus. I finish the job with Photoshop CS.

Thanks for looking !

My favorite object.
It was taken on 10/02 from Doughton Park, NC, on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Total exposure is 1h30min, 30 x 3min, Canon 20Da at ISO 1600.
Takahashi epsilon 160, F=530mm, f/3.3. Losmandy G-11, guiding with PHDGuiding and Takahashi FS60 with Phillips ToUCam.
Calibrated, aligned and stacked with ImagePlus, histogram stretched with Photoshop.

Thanks for looking !

Bubble nebula

Same spot, taken on 10/30.
Total exposure 1h25min, 17 x 5min, Canon 20Da, ISO 1600. The telescope was a Celestron 9.25, F=1480mm, f/6.3. I lost a few frames because of a shift in focus probably due to a lower temperature. Same method of guiding, same processing.

Thanks for looking!
