Jupiter from Canberra, 2nd March 2007

Hi all, after a long break due to bad weather and moving house (to another temporary house, still waiting for our new home to be built!), here's an image of Jupiter taken yesterday morning from my backyard here in Canberra.

Seeing was variable, not that great, maybe up to 7/10 at best.

Capture: 60 seconds each channel in R,G,B @ 38fps 640x480 16bit mode.

Jupiter and Io, 14th March 2007

This morning we had some great seeing in Canberra, there were sustained bursts where Io was visually identifiable as a small sphere showing slight phase against the clouds of Jupiter..

Jupiter from Murrumbateman, 27th March 2007

Last night / this morning was another hubble night here in Canberra. Matt got some good data from his home and I also found some excellent seeing at Murrumbateman about 25km north of Canberra.

The image data from this session is probably the best data I've collected on Jupiter to date, it seems substantially better than the seeing on the 14th of this month.

I have a lot more to do, but here's one early processed image.

Here is another view of the GRS region, taken 5 days (12 jovian rotations) after the image I posted from the 27th of March. It's intetesting to compare them and see how much the clouds have moved!

Conditions were not so good on the morning of April 7, there was a steady easterly breeze which always brings moist air and clouds. However I did get a couple of reasonable images before the clouds rolled in...

I recorded a lot of data on the night of April 13, here are two images processed so far, including a shadow and transit of Io.

I particularly like the fine yellow and blue streams flowing up to and around the GRS...

synthesized Jupiter, April 13

I ended up with several nice images from the April 13 batch, and now I wanted to experiment with artificially rotating and combining these images onto one "master" image that would represent the whole session.

In the end I chose images from 1751, 1812 and 1856, with 1812 as the base image and the other images rotated to match it. I haven't adjusted for illumination changes between the three images, so please excuse the patchwork nature of the image, but the final image resolution is better than any of the individual images.

Had a couple of nights of very good seeing at our new home in Murrumbateman - here's one image from last night.

Details:

13.1" f/5.5 newtonian @ f/41
Dragonfly Express mono camera + Astronomik filters
approx 2000 frames each in R,G,B @ 40fps
