Is there a way to do this? Thanks.

How can I change a rating

Posted By John Miele

Hi,

I gave a rating a couple days ago that I need to change based on new information I just received from the person I rated. How can I do this?

Thanks

Ian,

Your mirror maker is Jerry Wilkinson and I have one of his 6" f7.2 mirrors. It is an outstanding performer and I'm very happy with it. How do you like the one you have?

IR blocking for Jupiter and Saturn?

Posted By John Miele

Here's a probably quite dumb question. What is so bad about capturing the IR component in the image anyway? Why does the IR light apparently cause such a problem in the image?

Opinion on GPS11

Posted By John Miele

Hi Gerry,

I bought the aluminum tube version of the Nexstar GPS C11 XLT from Anacortes about 8 weeks and I really am happy with it. The goto and tracking work great. The optical quality appears to be excellent. I need to do some more critical testing to be sure though. But so far, the star mages are just beautiful and the detail on the Moon is awesome. I also saw the crepe ring on Saturn without any problem and a nice sharp cassini division all the way around. So far so good. The only drawback is the weight. It does take a fair effort to carry it around. Almost forgot, the motors are very quiet too! Much better than other scopes i have "heard" in the night.

Saturn observation and Color Sketch

Great observing report. I bow to your cold weather fortitude! I draw the line at 25-30 deg.F.!

I observed Saturn in my C11 a few times this month and noticed the polar hood is not nearly as dark and obvious as it was last year. I was wondering if other observers had noticed this too. Thanks for your report.

Thinking of moving to 8" or 10" DOB from refractor

Posted By John Miele

Hi Gary,

You said you are mechanically inclined so my advice is to buy the book by Richard Berry called "Build your own telescope" and then build a 10" f6 scope. This way you can put more of your money into a really good mirror and diagonal. You will also have a lot of fun. A scope like that can be the SINGLE scope that lasts you a lifetime in this hobby. If the mirror is a good one it will stun you with planetary details. It will also do a wonderful job on DSOs especially if you get it to a dark sky. The f6 ratio is pretty forgiving on collimation tolerances and one eyepiece designs.

Superb image! Please excuse my dumbness, but when you say "IR Pass Filter", you do mean a filter that blocks IR from getting through? Is that correct? I'm still trying to build up my imaging knowledge database!

Thanks

Hi Jim,

where did you get yours from? Mine are still on backorder from Anacortes.
