102 APO vs. 6" MCT for L & P?

Posted By Eddie Kirkland

I agree with all that Jim said. I might add that I have a Stellarvue 105 but before that I had an Intes MK66 (6" mak-cass). The MK66 gave beautiful planetary views when it had a chance to reach thermal equilibrium; but on many nights it took an hour or two to cool down, at least here in the South. So mak-cass's are not what I'd call "grab and go" due to the cool down problems. It is for this reason that I sold the mak and went refractor.

Georgia Sky View - Conditions?

Posted By Eddie Kirkland

I've been to Chiefland and GSV; the GSV site is not as dark nor does it have the horizons of Chiefland. However, it is a very laid back party with nice, friendly people. There are 2-3 light domes similar to the one from the town of Chiefland. I don't know how quantitatively the two sites compare.

Travel Scope

I can recommend the Stellarvue Nighthawk II; its what I take on my trips "Out West". I used to have a UA Microstar mount but replaced it with a Stellarvue M1 which is a better mount in my opinion. I have also had a Televue Telepod/Bogen 3246 and the Microstar or M1 are both better, IMO. The M1 has smoother motions, next is the Microstar, then Telepod.

Google Earth Where are the planes???

I've seen a helicopter in flight on Google. I just happened to be on one of the forest properties I manage just north of Mobile, AL.

As long as it's not EQ!

You might check out the Stellarvue M1; I have one and its very smooth and very stable with my 5# Nighthawk. I used to have the UA Microstar which was pretty equal but not quite as smooth moving, IMO. Both of these would work very well in your situation.

If you want to spend a little more money, look into the Takahashi Lapides Teegul; although it is a little heavier than the other two, it has slow motion knobs for alt and az. I have had one now for about 2 months and really like it.

First light report 14.5" f4.3 homebuilt truss dob

Hi Jim, congratulations on your new scope!! Living only a few hours from Deerlick, I've been very interested in trying it out. Can you tell me what facilities are on site and how would you rate the skies (limiting mag, etc). Membership is very reasonable so I may have to give it a try.

Toyota Tacoma

Tony, I've been lusting after the same truck; I'll get one some day. While you're up on the rim, check out Blue Ridge Ranger Station on Hwy 87 for me (just north of Clint's Well); I worked there one summer.

Auburn hurt my self-esteem...

Posted By Eddie Kirkland

That game in particular really helped us Auburn fan's self-esteem. Now our season holds some promise; before, I was afraid that we might not even win 50% of our games. Good luck this weekend against LSU; I'm pulling for the Gators.

WO 80 FD vs Sky 90

Posted By Eddie Kirkland

Was this the older Sky 90 or the newer Sky 90 II? The newer ones I believe are supposed to have improved optics.
