Wishing these clouds would disappear!

What are you doing, Floyd?!?!

You go and get a new scope and sentence us all to rain! And you just HAD to get a super-cool scope, so now it will probably be WEEKS of rain!

Shame on you! smile

Good mid-grade binocs for birding/astronomy?

Posted By ken pfeiffer

Hey Ken,

Have you checked out these?

http://www.buytelescopes.com/product.asp?t=&pid=4898&m=

Celestron roof prisms for less than $400. Nice binos for 10x42, you might even want to check out the 10x50s for slightly more aperture (and weight).

Clear skies! (Since we haven't been having any for a long time, how about Lotsa' Birds!?)

TMB130LW Super Light Cup First Cloudy Light

Thanks for the review, Ron!

I hope you get a chance to give a more complete comparison between your 102 and your new baby when the weather clears up some more.

Have fun!

What has happened to Celestron quality and repair?

Posted By ken pfeiffer

Hi Doug,

My luck with Celestron repair has been pretty good EXCEPT for the collimation issue. They did not do a good job at all.

They fixed my fork mount and electronics very well, but they simply dropped the ball with collimation.

Do you think they are doing worse now than they were about five years ago?

MY dwindling scope family. :^(

It sounds like refractor time, my friend!

What else could provide you with such fascination, such comfortable companionship, and such clear views?

My Celestron Prediction: CPC

Any idea how the new "alignment" system works? It says just pick three bright stars and the system does everything else. That was harder than before, when you only needed two. Unless you don't actually have to align to the selected stars...

Shipping Over Borders

Posted By ken pfeiffer

We have talked about shipping stuff TO Canada. How about shipping stuff FROM Canada to the US?

Are there import duties? How should the goods be shipped?

alt-az vs GEM

Posted By ken pfeiffer

You will need some kind of equatorial mount, or as Jack mentioned, a field derotator.

The simplest thing to use is either a GEM or a fork mount with a wedge, which converts it to an equatorial. Most astrophotographers use the GEM, because it is easier to balance, is more stable, and less prone to vibration.

Gold Finch (and new lens)

Posted By ken pfeiffer

Wow! Nice shot. How much did you pay for that lens? I have seen a few astro items from Pro-optic that were relatively inexpensive, but not that good. Your lens looks really good!

And why not an American Robin?

Posted By ken pfeiffer

Yes, right on. And good shot!
We saw one of these on a walk
today and enjoyed it even more
because of your comment. Thanks!
