Everglades Kites

These birds are only found in the US in southern Florida, in a few localities in the Everglades. One of these spots is Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge in Palm Beach County. I see them there almost every time I visit. They manage several square miles of diked marsh for apple snail production, the only food for these rare birds (also know as Snail Kites).
Shot from the hip on the fly, so not the best images, but you can tell what it is!

I took a walk yesterday here in southwestern Ohio. It was below freezing despite the sun, so there was still some interesting ice in the creek. It's getting warmer, so maybe this is the last of the ice...

Swallowtail

I saw this nice swallowtail on a wild azalea in the Choctahatchee River swamp in northern Florida. We were there hunting for Ivory-Billed Woodpeckers. We didn't see any Ivory-Bills, but it sure was nice in the swamp: no mosquitos, clear blue sky and 70 degrees, lots of bird activity. It was heavenly.

Barred Owl

I came across this guy while paddling in the river swamp near the Choctahatchee river in the Florida panhandle. He seemed very much at ease with my presence, and stayed put for three hours while I painted him from my kayak. The owls were numerous and very vocal, lending an air of mystery to the foggy cypress and gum trees.

A "flood" in the swamp

Is it classified as a flood when it's in a swamp that is normally flooded? The water was high, enabling me to get my kayak far back into the forest. This is the Choctahatchee river basin in the Florida panhandle. We were there looking for Ivory-Billed Woodpeckers. Didn't see any, but it sure was beautiful.

Carpenter bees

These guys can be an annoyance when they drill 1/25" holes all over your wood structures. They are not particularly aggressive, and I don't know of anyone who has been stung by these guys. The damage happens when some hungry woodpecker discovers that your walls are full of tasty bee larva.
I was able to capture them in flight because of their tendency to hover in one spot.

Sandhill Crane

I saw this Sandhill in the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge in Palm Beach County, Florida in January. This bird seemed almost tame, letting me take his portrait from about 30 feet away.

Crab Spider

A Crab Spider from southern Florida. The extra additions to the web are to alert birds so they don't ruin the spider's hard work.
Is it just me, or do you see a smiley face on the spider's abdomen?
