New build 6" f/4.5 newtonian

Posted By Greg Shaffer

So the idea of having the window made uncoated and reaching out to coating houses instead of having it down at the same time has proven to be worth it.

So far I have two window quotes in (not counting the $15k ridiculous one)

$1300 and $1500 with IF reports. Coating house said $125 per side which is roughly 1/3 of what the fabricators were wanting.

I think it might. Trump and or his people are targeting folks like me, Richard, Russ Carroll and Mark Costello quite specifically with this move. He is targeting us early and targeting us where our political souls live. Pretty good idea in my view.

Jim

Yep..... I watched some discussion regarding the list this morning. Smart move and reinforces the fact that much of what has been pushed about how liberal he is can be construed as hype.

So I acquired a Mark Harry 6" mirror about 3 years ago that has been bugging for an OTA for a while now smile

Started fiddling with it in earnest a few months ago whenever the notion struck me. Have decided on making it a spiderless newt using an optical window to mount the secondary and contacted several glass houses for a quote to my specs for a window. Have the 8" tube, 2ndary, mirror cell etc all ready to go, starting on the cell for the window. If I like the way this turns out a 6.9" f/10 will be next with a window. Disregard the spider in the pic....Having read up on Ed Turco's windowed newt I am going that route.

So now that I fully understand the costs involved with building using a window I have decided the 6" f/4.5 will be built using a curved spider and relegated to superfinder status on my Dob mirrorbox. I am however moving ahead with a windowed 6.7" f/9.2 Spooner mirror build. Cant see spending the bucks for more than one of these.

Also getting the window uncoated....all the glass pushers want too much for coating, minimum $500 for coating both sides. Majestic will coat both sides with MgF2 for $125.

I have 4 quotes in hand now. $1300.00, $2000.00, $5000.00+ and $15,000+ lol....I think one can guess who is winning....It appears Cumberland Optics is the clear choice given they were all given the same exact specs.

I posted this on CN but also wanted to share that I finally finished my first mirror. Came out to f/5.7 (8") and looked pretty decent to me. Thinking of shipping the mirror off this week to get coated... haven't heard back from OWL. What's the quickest turnaround? SpectruM? Magestic?

Based on reputation alone I will say Magestic (regarding turn around time)

Even I would say to those trying to disarm American's from the right to protect themselves with lethal weapons, go F yourselves. You have an absolute right legally and morally to defend your life.

Seeeeee....common ground smile

I really thought Trump was going to win the pPresidency in a landslide when Cruz got out of the race. I was never happy about that, but I could read the writing on the wall. i just thought Hillary was that unpopular, and that Trump would moderate his tone.

I was wrong.

I never thought that Trump would not only continue down the moronic path he was on that won him the Republican nomination, but that the racist statements that he had made would actually get worse.

Qualified to be President??? I'm not sure he qualifies to be an American.

Those that will Trumpet him here, or bash Clinton, will be in a fairly small minority on election day.

While I wont ever be tooting my horn for Trump its a moot point as Hillary has resigned from the Presidential race. Breaking News is they found a brain tumor when she went in for a colonoscopy.....

BIG TELESCOPE - BIG MISTAKE?

I finally got all the parts to build my final biggest telescope: A 36-inch f/3.75 Dob (to replace my ~too-small~ 29-inch). The 36 will just fit my geodesic dome up this dark rural hill from the house. Found a buyer for the 29 and threw in a brand new enclosed deluxe 12x5x5 trailer almost free! Good for him and good for me. Thanx, Kevin! So I am committed to the 36, excited and a bit trepid. I got the excellent journal Amateur Astronomy back issues on DVD and have been reading back from the present to educate myself on the history of Dobs. Tom Clark composed an excellent article 10 years ago (issue 51) wherein he describes the +/- of scopes small to gigantic. He concludes that [scopes around half gigantic (such as half of 36) are generally most staisfying for a variety of reasons that we DS folks are familiar with.] And I gota admit my most satisfying By Far was the trusty 17.5 that I built using a (good!) Coulter mirror and oil drums. It resided in a 12-foot dome behind the house and was pure pleasure exploring the cosmos. Also cheap, easy, reliable = +++. My 29 was expensive and required more TLC to perform. The exceptional nights were indeed wonderful. Now comes the 36! Tom's consul regarding his 36a, 36b and 42 is: [exceptional on rare exceptional nights --- but smaller scopes far more often perform to capability.] And my experience with the 29 bears that out. When it's good, it's GREAT ... but the seeing cooperates far less often. So now I will build the 36, install it in the dome --- and hope for the best. I'm targeting 1st light by Aug 1st - might take longer. All excited and wondering what I have gotten mysely into. I'm actually very happy that I decided to do it. Worst that can happen is I won't like it all that much --- and that would be OK. Tom Dey

I wouldn't sweat it much....via easily accomplished masking you can beat the seeing restrictions....one way is off axis masking. http://www.bbastrodesigns.com/OffAxisMasks.html and when the seeing co-operates? Forget about it smile

Question for Constitution Scholars

There is some "evidence" out there ....

http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/2016/03/28/Ex-Trump-Insider-Donald-Doesn-t-Want-Be-President

... that Donald Trump does not want to President. He either is locked into running for the Presidency or just wants to win it because in his eyes the Donald does nothing but win. But these and others like them make a case for the Donald not really wanting the job even if he wins.

So let's suppose the Donald wins the November Election, as unlikely as that is looking to be at this time. On the following Wednesday he announces that he will not serve as President. What happens next? Does Hillary get it because she came in #2 (she won't come in any lower than this)? Does the GOP VP candidate become President? Does this go to the House? Is a special election held? Is there another outcome I missed?

My guess, and I'm no expert on this is: The GOP VP candidate becomes the President-elect. It's the smoothest solution and IMHO FWIW best approximates the intent of the authors of the Constitution as currently amended.

If he is already sworn in then the VP becomes president same as if he had died. If he was not yet sworn in then the VP becomes *acting* president until a new election can be run. At least that is the way I understand it.
