Election night plans... survey.

Alas, I'll be glued to CNN watching those early results come in.   I can't help myself.  CNN has by far the best down the middle election night coverage.  If it looks like one side or the other is pulling ahead, I might flip to MSNBC or Fox (for the side falling behind) to see the wailing and gnashing of teeth.  I enjoy pundit despondency more than I like the gloating on the other side - must be a character defect of mine.

Tonight will be better of course, Purdue tips off their 2025/2025 men's college basketball campaign.  Go Boilers!

Harris tops Trump in Iowa in latest Des Moines Register poll

Maybe it’s an outlier as Trump’s campaign is saying, but this pollster was correct in 2020 and 2016 with Trump up by a lot in Iowa which foreshadowed what happened in the swing states, that Trump was popular and it would be very close.

Whoever wins won’t affect me, but it will affect my grandkids, so I want Trump to go down.

Selfishly I’ve been praying for a Harris victory for one other reason. I want to see a certain head explode. LOL.
The same day, another pollster had Trump up 9 in IA.  One of them must be wrong!  Did you see Silver's article about poll herding this year?  It is very good.  Far to many pollsters (far more than is mathematically plausible given the margin of error in any political poll) have been herding toward the Trump +1, Harris +1 virtual tie scenarios for all the swing states.  The new Des Moines poll can certainly not be accused of following the herd!

My own conclusion as of yesterday, based in part upon this tendency of the pollsters to herd, is that one of Trump or Harris is going to win the electoral college pretty easily, but we have no idea yet who the winner will be.

Nate Silver's colleague agrees:  "The election could look like a landslide with a normal polling error in either direction"

Trump Backs RFK Jr's Plan To Remove Fluoridation From Water! General Jack D Ripper Proven Correct!

Hmmm.  Good point.  Let's just hope that sanity prevails on this and so many other issues if Trump wins.

For the Harris campaign, it has been a massive effort with many busloads of campaign volunteers knocking on doors in critical battleground states. The number of busses and volunteers may be unprecedented in presidential campaigns.

Will it be enough and will it be successful?, we'll soon find out...
I hope it is soon.  Delayed voting returns are rocket fuel for the conspiracy theorists and whack jobs out there.

There is an interesting concept being discussed in the comments on Silver's blog - assuming that the winner of Pennsylvania is slow to materialize, what does one watch to see if his or her candidate is doing well?

Some are easy - If Harris wins IA, GA, NC, or is oddly competitive in Florida/Texas, it is probably going to be a Harris electoral landslide.  On the other hand if Trump wins New Hampshire, Virginia, or if NY is weirdly close, then look out.

I still think if Lichtman's "Keys to the Election" were properly interpreted his methodology would show a Trump win.  That said, I am more optimistic of a Harris win than I was a week ago.  My gut is saying that it is indeed 50/50 and Harris's better ground game might deliver the goods.  Also, Trump is counting on the support of seldom-voting 18-30 year old males, and just how reliable is that cohort (not!).

Still, as Silver and his colleague say, a standard polling error in either direction will lead to an EC landslide...

While early voting data can be interpreted in any way you like, a lot of the early voting data looks good for Harris, but admittedly, some looks good for Trump, too. Overall, though, I think things are leaning Harris' way.

Trump is just a mess and undisciplined. Did you see where he was simulating oral sex with his mic at a rally the other day? What the hell is that? Talk about weird and undisciplined. The comedian at the NY MAGA rally who famously made the "garbage" comments was also apparently recommended by the Vance team and entirely unvetted, even though it's known he's a shock and insult comic. Who the hell let that happen? This is not a disciplined campaign at all.

By the way, Trump will win Texas, but I think it will be closer than anyone could have imagined. The reality is that Trump has slipped drastically, even in states like Kansas, which used to be solid red. That does not bode well for his election at all. Also, women are turning out and voting in droves for Harris, and they can't stand Trump.  If you had to choose which candidate you wanted to be right now, most of us would choose Harris. I still believe Trump's base support has shrunk, and he has not won over new voters, especially when it comes to women or new or young voters.

Also, Trump is already claiming fraud and filing lawsuits in PA. This is not what a confident campaign does.
Hi James:  You make a ton of great points here, but I can't get rid of the nagging thought that you, me and lot's of other people could have, and probably did, write this exact same post the day before the election in 2016.

It is fascinating how States move in and out of swing state status.  When you and I started posting in this forum during the Bush years, Colorado was the ultimate swing state.  Now we are as blue as blue can be.  Florida of course was won by Bush in 2000 by less than 1000 votes, now it is a solid red stronghold.  Later, Ohio had it's place as the "all eyes are on the tipping point" state.  Not so much anymore.  I would not be surprised if TX became a tipping point in 4 or 8 years.  Most of the South and Southwest has trended Republican over the last decade or so, so maybe not.   J

In 4 years, my portfolio will still grow considerably, and even if the worst happens for me, such as my and my wife's health failing simultaneously, we will still be ok. I can afford to put us both in a nursing home and still have our principal grow considerably enough to leave behind some legacy building. I would prefer that Harris win, but we will see.
Hey, isn't that my line?  cool

Do you still vote at a polling place?   I thought CA had a mail-out, Drop box return system like our super efficient system in CO.
